Blue Devils comeback falls short against Blugolds

MENOMONIE (December 3, 2022) - The first appearance in the rivalry game against UW-Eau Claire (7-3-0, 3-1-0 WIAC) saw the Blugolds beating UW-Stout (8-3-0, 2-2-0 WIAC) with a score of 4-2. The Blue Devils scored twice in the third period, but the comeback fell short against Eau Claire. 

In the first period, Stout went on a power play just 6:36 of the game, but the Blugolds killed off the extra attacker.

At 9:12 of the period, Eau Claire went on a power play. During the power play, the Blugold's Jack Johnston beat Masternak on a back door goal. Assists were given to Kyler Grundy and Quinn Green on the power play goal. 

The Blue Devils went on another power play at 12:58 of the period, but Eau Claire again, killed the penalty off. 

Just under a minute left in the period, Eau Claire's Quinn Green scored to make the game 2-0. Dawson Klein and Sammy Martel assisted on the goal. 

To start the second period, Stout went on their third power play chance. Eau Claire killed off the penalty. 

Eau Claire went on their own power play at 4:56 of the period. During the power play, Stout's Dylan Rallis went on a breakaway, but was held from behind. Rallis was awarded a penalty shot, but failed to find the back of the net. 

Stout killed off the Blugold penalty, but just one second after the power play, Eau Claire scored to make it 3-0. Tyler Love scored for the Blugolds with an assist from Ty Readman. 

Just four seconds after the goal, the Blue Devils suffered another penalty and skated one man down. During the Blugold power play, Eau Claire took a penalty and the game saw a four on four for 33 seconds. After the four on four play, Stout went on a power play for 1:27, but failed to get a goal. 

Stout went on two power play chances, one at 11:55 and one at 14:11, but did not get on the scoreboard. 

Eau Claire scored another goal at 16:45 on a breakaway. Blugold's Ryan Green scored on the breakaway goal to make the game 4-0. 

With just 13 seconds left in the second period, Stout's Trenten Heyde finally beat Eau Claire's Gutjahr. Cole Beckstead assisted on the goal to make the game 4-1. 

In the third period, Stout's Kullan Daikawa scored to get within two goals at 7:37. The assists were handed to Jacob Halvorson and Noe Perez

The Blue Devils comeback fell short as the game ended with the Blugolds winning 4-2. 

Eau Claire's Max Gutjahr stopped 23 shots and got his seventh win of the season. Blue Devil's Tyler Masternak received his first loss of the season, stopping 14 shots. 

Up next for the Blue Devils is a home matchup against UW-River Falls at the Fanetti Community Center. Puck drops at 7:00 p.m on Friday, December 9.
