Blue Devils score three goals in third period, down Lumberjacks 3-2

MENOMONIE (December 2, 2022) - After the first two periods being scoreless, UW-Stout (8-2-0, 2-1-0 WIAC) scored three goals in the third period to take down the Lumberjacks. Northland College (0-10-1, 0-5-0 WIAC) also scored two goals in the third period. 

Northland went on the power play only 2:46 into the game, but Stout killed off the penalty. Stout went on their own power play at 11:58 of the period. During the power play, Stout had a few shots and chances to get on the scoreboard first, but the Lumberjacks ended the extra attacker with no goals against. 

After a scoreless first period, shots were in favor of the Blue Devils 7-5. 

The second period also went scoreless as both teams were trying to get the lead. 

The Lumberjacks went on another power play at 13:20 of the second period, but Stout killed it off once again. 

After two period, Stout led in shots 14-11. 

After two scoreless periods, the last period saw five goals. 

Northland got on the board first at 5:25 of the third period when Ty Brown scored. Josh King got the assist on the goal. 

But Stout wouldn't back down. The Blue Devils scored at 9:58 of the third period when Jacob Halvorson scored his seventh goal of the season. The tying goal was assisted by Maksis Brimanis

Just 26 seconds later, Stout went on a power play and this time found the back of the net to take the lead. Kobe Keller scored fifth goal of the year with assists from Halvorson and Trenten Heyde as the Blue Devils led 2-1. 

At 12:44 of the period, Stout seemed to have scored a goal to take a two goal lead, but it was waved off. 

Just five seconds after, Northland went on a power play, but Stout killed off the penalty to keep the lead at one. 

Stout found the back of the net to make the game 3-1 when Jacob Halvorson scored his second goal of the night. Brendan Boyce assisted on the goal and the Blue Devils looked to go on to win. 

But the Lumberjacks didn't back down as they scored at 18:56 of the third period. Ty Brown scored his second goal of the game and the game was 3-2. 

With 30 seconds left in the game, Stout took a penalty. Northland pulled their goalie and the game saw a six on four. But the Blue Devils held their own and got their second conference win. 

Tyler Masternak stopped 13 shots and got his sixth win of the season. Northland's Viktor Wennberg stopped 25 shots. 

Up next is a matchup with the Blugolds of UW-Eau Claire on Saturday, December 2. Puck drops at 7:00 p.m.
