LAST TIME OUT: UW-STOUT: The Blue Devils celebrated the 100th meeting with UW-Eau Claire by a demolition of the Blugolds, setting an individual game scoring record for the second consecutive week with a 73-29 win at Williams Stadium. Not much could stop the Blue Devils in the romp over the Blugolds Saturday night. Stout scored 10 touchdowns and ran up nearly 700 yards of offense in the big win.  Stout finished with 698 total offensive yards, 340 yards rushing and 358 through the air. The Blue Devils averaged 10.3 yards per play and earned 29 first downs. The defense had six pass break ups and six quarterback hurries and forced a turnover. Eau Claire had 445 total yards and outside of Ruble had not much working on the ground. Harry Roubidoux finished 16-38 for 219 yards, two scores and an interception. |  Game Story and Stats

LAST TIME OUT: UW-LA CROSSE:  The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team, ranked ninth on this week's D3football.com Top-25 Poll, fell 34-31 to third-ranked UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. Isotalo-McGuire later hit the game-winning field goal from 39-yards out with :03 left. UWL finished with 293 yards on Saturday, including 118 rushing and 175 passing. UW-Whitewater totaled 479 yards, including 132 rushing and 347 passing. Lewandowski went 26-of-34 for 347 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. |  Game Story and Stats

WHEN STOUT AND LA CROSSE LAST MET:   Arthur Cox had a career-day catching the ball, Levy Hamer recorded his ninth 100 yard-plus receiving game, quarterback Sean Borgerding threw for more than 300 yards for the seventh time in his career and UW-Stout racked up 400 or more yards of total offense for the sixth time this season, but it wouldn't be enough as the Blue Devils lost in a shootout with 14th-ranked UW-La Crosse, 44-38, at Veteran's Memorial Field Oct. 23, 2021. Cox caught six passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 86 yards in kick returns to finish with 253 all-purpose yards. Hamer pulled in six passes for 124 yards and a 44-yard TD reception. Borgerding completed 20 of 29 passes for 341 yards and four TDs, but was intercepted twice, including for a pick-6 in the second quarter. As a team, Stout tallied 431 yards of total offense, 341 in the air and 90 yards rushing. |  Story and Stats

THE SERIES: The Eagles hold a 73-16-5 lead in the series that began in 1913. La Crosse has won the last nine match-ups. Stout's last win over the Eagles came Oct. 22, 2011, a 10-0 Stout win in Menomonie.   |  History

A LOOK AT THE BLUE DEVILS: Putting up 139 points over the span of two games gets noticed around the league. Stout is currently receiving 13 votes in the most recent DIII Top 25 poll. The Stout offensive is putting up impressive numbers, averaging 463.8 yards per game (237.8 passing, 226 rushing) and scoring around 42 points per game. The defense is holding teams to only 375.6 yards per game (259.8 passing, 115.8 rushing) and has taken the ball away seven times. | Complete 2022 Blue Devil preview | 2022 Statistics

THE PASSING GAME: Sean Borgerding has thrown 63 completions for 859 yards and 10 touchdowns in the first four games of the season. On the receiving end of those passes have been Borgerding's favorite targets, Levy Hamer, Arthur Cox, and Parker Fossum. Hamer leads the corps with 302 yards and four touchdowns on 14 catches. Cox is right behind him with 178 yards and three touchdowns with 16 catches. Fossum has 13 catchs for 148 yards and a touchdown. Also getting in on the action is Will Knutson and running back Ben Tolkinen. Knutson has five caches for 80 yards while Tolkinen has two receptions for 38 yards and a touchdown.

THE RUNNING GAME: Stout's last two games saw over 300 yards gained on the ground. Carter Fonger is leading the team in yards gained, despite having one of the fewest carries. Fonger has taken the ball 208 yards and has reached the end zone four times in only eight carries. Three of Fonger's four touchdowns have been from over 50 yards out (51, 55, 67). Ben Tolkinen and Arthur Cox each have 13 carries - Tolkinen has 127 yards and Cox has 87.

TOTAL OFFENSE: In the first four games of the 2022 season, Stout has recorded 1855 total yards, throwing for 951 yards and rushing for 904 yards.

DEFENSE: Cannon Griner and Mack Klafter lead Stout in tackles, recording 25.0 and 23.0 respectively. Griner also has an interception and a forced fumble, both against Gustavus Adolphus. Klafter has made 4.5 tackles for a loss. Andrew Thompson and Dylan Larrabee each have 3.0 tackles for a loss. The Blue Devils also have applied pressure to opposing quarterbacks well. Wyatt Beyerl and Quinton Williams each have recorded two sacks. Gervase Thomspon has also recorded a sack that resulted in a loss of 18 yards. Williams and Nathan Williamson each have a fumble recovery, and Williamson also recorded a blocked field goal. Carter Johnson has picked the ball off twice. With Andrew Thompson, Gabe Kramer, and Canon Griner each recording one.

THE KICKING GAME: After not even getting any chances in the season opener against Wartburg College, sophomore kicker Luke Cool has been on fire. Cool has made 19 of 22 extra point attempts and even when he had a PAT blocked, Cool scooped up the ball and ran it in for a two-point conversion against UW-Eau Claire. Cool was 2 for 3 in extra points against Gustavus Adolphus, 9 for 9 against Crown and 8 for 10 against UW-Eau Claire. It is safe to say Cool is one of very few Blue Devil kickers - possibly the only Stout kicker - to ever run for a 2-point conversion. Looking back through 1996, no Stout kicker has run for a 2-point conversion. College football instituted the 2-point conversion in 1958. Cool is seventh in the WIAC - the first kicker -  for points scored with 27.

CLIMBING THE LADDER: A strong showing against UW-Eau Claire has QB Sean Borgerding and Levy Hamer inching closer to the top spot in their respective categories on Stout's all-time list.

Borgerding, a three-time WIAC honorable mention selection, has completed 604 of 1076 passes for 7981 yards, with 77 touchdowns against only 32 interceptions. Borgerding's total passing yards is currently third on the all-time list, behind only Tim Peterson (8881 yds/1986-89) and Matt Bunyan (8562 yds/1995-98). His 77 touchdowns trail only Bunyan's 85. Last season, Borgerding completed 205 of 327 passes for 2872 with 29 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Only Bunyan (3230 yds, 1998/3221 yds, 1997) and Peterson (2956, 1989) have thrown more yards in a single season and only Bunyan (38 TDs, 1998/33 TDs, 1997) has thrown more touchdowns in a single season.

Borgerding will need exactly 900 more yards and eight touchdowns to tie the top spot in all time passing yards and all time passing touchdowns.

Hamer, a second team all-region pick in 2021, has been a recipient of many of Borgerding's passes. Hamer is currently second on the Blue Devils' all-time receiving list, pulling in 192 passes for 3115 yards and 30 touchdowns. Hamer trails only Scott Frederickson (1986-89) in receptions and yards. Frederickson has 233 receptions for 3390 yards. Hamer currently holds the record for most career receiving touchdowns with 29, ahead of Frederickson with 26. Hamer is currently fifth on the all-time scoring list with 184 points, right behind Evan Larsen who has 187. Running back Luke Bundgaard (2000-03) is the all-time scoring leader with 240 points. Hamer led the WIAC in receiving yards per game last year, averaging 96.2 yards over 10 games. Hamer was fourth in the WIAC in scoring with 74 points.

Hamer only needs 275 yards to tie for the most receiving yards all time.

Sparger led the Blue Devil football team to the 1965 WSUC championship. After leaving Stout in 1972, Sparger served as the WSUC commissioner. Sparger is a member of the UW-Stout Hall of Fame, as well as the WIAC Hall of Fame.

STOUT FOOTBALL HISTORY: Stout Institute played their first game on Nov. 4, 1911, when they lost to River Falls Normal School, 13-11. Walter Anderson scored Stout's first touchdown, an 85 yard kickoff return. A week later, Stout won their first game, 30-2, against LaCrosse Business School as Harvey Tice scored four touchdowns. The predecessor to the WIAC began in 1913 and Stout has won five conference titles - 1921, 1941, 1949, 1965 and 2000. Stout became the Blue Devils during the late 1920s or early 1930s. Football was not played during the war years of 1918, 1943, and 1944. Along the way, the school has gone through a number of name changes - Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Stout celebrated 100 years of football with a season-long celebration and alumni reunion during the 2011 season. | A 10-week series on Stout football is available.

TAILGATING: UW-Stout has adopted a formal tailgating policy for Blue Devil football games. The south end of the parking lot by the Don and Nona Williams Stadium has been designated as a tailgating area known as the "Tailgate Zone." Fans will be able to participate in the Blue Devil Walk. Tailgating is permitted three hours before the game, and tailgating activities will cease at game time. Only propane grills are permitted, no open flame grills. Tobacco is not permitted.

EUROPEAN FLAVOR: UW-Stout coach Clayt Birmingham has been active in raising the popularity of American football in Europe and has made several trips to Europe to participate in workshops and coaching clinics. Quentin Danès, a football coach from France, spent two weeks in the Blue Devils' 2019 training camp. | Danes Feature story | During the 2018 season, the Blue Devils had a coach from Germany into preseason camp for a couple of days. Enzo Rosani began his career as a Blue Devil, joining Stout as a cornerback from France on the 2014 roster. Feature Story In all likelihood, Rosani is the only international student to have played football for UW-Stout for four seasons. Rosani earned All-WIAC second team honors. For the 2019 season, Quentin Danes spent two weeks during the preseason working with the coaching staff. Danes was a teammate of Rosani on the French national team...The Blue Devils have consistently welcomed European coaches to their training camp. In 2011 it was Nico Teichert and Johannes Fiebig from Germany getting an up close look at American football. The Blue Devils also had Antti Kurenniemi, a native of Finland, on their roster in 2011. Kurenniemi saw action in several games. In 2012, the Blue Devils, for the first time in several years, did not host a European coach, but did have an international player, Jan Andre Millemann from Germany, who is the subject of this feature story.

DON & NONA WILLIAMS STADIUM: UW-Stout's Don and Nona Williams Stadium got a facelift in 2018 with the installation of an updated surface. FieldTurf installed the FieldTurf Revolution 360. FieldTurf promotes this surface as having "optimal durability, resilience, and feel." A padding/drainage mat will be added, as well as flushing the current drainage system to make sure the field sheds water as designed. The field's layout will be similar to the previous markings and will again include markings for high school hash marks. The S logo at midfield has been replaced by the new Blaze head logo. The stadium, which was opened during the 2001 season, last had the stadium turf replaced during the summer of 2008 when the original Astroturf-type surface was replaced with ProGrass, a surface that more closely resembled natural grass. Don & Nona Williams Stadium was only the second artificial playing surface in the state of Wisconsin when it opened in 2001. At the time, the Wisconsin Badgers were the only Wisconsin college team that played their games on artificial turf. The Green Bay Packers had an artificial surface in their practice facility. Now, every WIAC school has an artificial surface, and many high schools in the state have followed suit.

UP NEXT: : After three games at home, the Blue Devils begin a two-game road trip by traveling to coach Clayt Birmingham's alma mater, UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m..

COACH BIRMINGHAM AS A POINTER: (Updated Oct. 4, 2022) UW-Stout coach Clayt Birmingham was a four-year regular in the defensive backfield during his playing days with the Pointers. Birmingham was a two-time All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) defensive back at UW-Stevens Point (1995, 1994). In 1994, Birmingham was the WIAC interceptions co-leader. So we had to dig into the files to find out how Coach Birmingham fared against the Blue Devils. On Oct. 22, 1994 on Nelson Field in Menomonie, as Stout was driving for a TD, Birmingham stepped in front of a Forrest Schneider pass in the end zone to end the threat. On Oct. 23, 1993 in Stevens Point, Birmingham recorded a five-yard sack. As a player, Birmingham's Pointers did not lose to Stout in his four years. As a coach, Birmingham is 8-4 against his alma mater, including a 45-14 non-conference in the 2021 season.

NOTE FOR 2022: Sean Borgerding has never thrown for less than 300 yards against UW-La Crosse.
