Stevens Point (October 15, 2022) - UW-Stout's strong defense helped pave the way to a huge 55-0 win over WIAC opponent UW-Stevens Point. Stout held the Pointers to only 131 yards while recording 594 of their own. Stevens Point (1-5, 0-3 WIAC) was unable to get past the Blue Devil's defense and was unable to stop the Blue Devil's offense. Stout improves to 4-2 on the season and 2-1 in the WIAC.
Stout didn't allow a single score from the Pointers offense, recording their first shut out since the opening game of the 2017 season where Stout won 17-0 against Simpson College.
The Blue Devils only needed four plays to open up the scoreboard. Starting on their own 36, Stout QB
Sean Borgerding recorded a three yard rush before throwing a 56-yard pass to
Arthur Cox. A quick rush by Ben Tolkein set up Borgerding pass to
Parker Fossum for a six-yard touchdown.
The Pointers started to move down the field on their first drive, but the Stout defense forced a punt on fourth down. Both teams punted the ball back in forth for the rest of the first quarter. To start off the second quarter, a UWSP penatly made a 3rd and 17 for the Pointers. On the third and long,
Scott Gustafson and Johnny Schmitt made it to the Pointer QB for a 10-yard loss, forcing 4th and 27.
The Blue Devils offense capitalized on the strong defense by scoring in four plays. Borgerding found Fossum yet again for a huge 55-yard touchdown pass. Fossum had never caught two touchdown passes in a single game until now.
The next possession,
Scott Gustafson found his way to the QB on a crucial 3rd and 6, forcing yet another UWSP punt. The Stout offense took the punt and drove down the field, finishing the drive with a one-yard Ben Tolkein touchdown rush.
After the touchdown rush,
Mason Priebe intercepted the ball at the Stout 47, ending a the Pointers drive. Stout got the ball back with three minutes left in the half. They took that whole time to make it down to the two yard-line. Ending the half with a
Luke Cool field goal from 19 yards out.
Coming out of the half, Pointers were forced to punt it away again. A long Blue Devil drive, which featured some key third-down conversions, resulted in another touchdown. At first, Borgerding found
Levy Hamer on a 16 yard-touchdown pass, but it was called back due to pass interference. Two plays later,
Chase Hughes ran into the end zone from three-yards out, giving the Blue Devils a 31-0 lead.
The next offensive drive for Stout resulted in a seven-yard rushing touchdown for
Carter Fonger, his fifth of the season. a kickoff and one play later,
Kyle Wilson picked off Charlie Smith and put the ball back in Stout's hands. Stout capitalized on that turnover with a 26-yard field goal from
Luke Cool.
A couple drives later in the fourth quarter, QB
Mitch Waechter put on the wheels, rushing for an 87 yard touchdown. This 87-rush is good for the second longest rush from scrimmage in Stout history.
After this huge play, Stout special teams recovered a fumble on the kickoff, giving the offense two back-to-back drives. Jalen Gordan forced the fumble and
Quinton Williams picked it up at the UWSP 27-yard line.
Colin Smith finished this drive with a three-yard rushing touchdown, giving Stout the 55-0 victory.
As a team Stout recorded 594 yards (412 rushing, 182 passing) while holding Point to 131 yards (83 passing, 48 rushing). Those 412 rushing yards are the third most in a single game in school history.
Borgerding completed 13 out of 20 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns.
Parker Fossum finished with 72 yards receiving and two touchdowns,
Arthur Cox put up 59 receiving yards, and 50 rushing. QB Mitch Waetcher and
Sean Borgerding led the team with 117 yards and 50 yards rushing. Waetcher also found the back of the end zone on an 87 yard rush.
Carter Fonger, Ben Tolkein,
Chase Hughes, and
Colin Smith all found the end zone on the ground.
On the defensive end, Canon Griner and
Nick Arguedas each had 7.0 tackles.
Nathan Williamson,
Andrew Thompson, and
Scott Gustafson each had 6.0. Gustafson also recorded 2.0 sacks.
Mason Priebe and
Kyle Wilson each had an interception.
Luke Cool finished the game with a perfect PAT (going seven for seven) and two field goals (18 yards and 26 yards).
The Blue Devils are still on the road next weekend, taking on the Titans of Oshkosh. Oshkosh is currently ranked 19th in the nation. The game is set for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 22nd.
