Big Plays Factor in Blue Devils 19-14 Loss at UW-Oshkosh

OSHKOSH, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Stout Blue Devils (4-3, 2-2) fell 19-14 on the road to the 24th ranked UW-Oshkosh Titans (4-3, 2-2) Saturday afternoon. 

Following a Blue Devil touchdown early in the fourth quarter, the Titans returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards to retake the lead at 19-14 and were able to hold on defensively down the stretch to avoid the upset. 

The Blue Devils dominated in nearly every aspect of the game. Out gaining the Titans in total yards (408-351), running 33 more plays (79-46), first downs (26-15) and doubling up the Titans in time of possession (40:30 -19:30). But big plays propelled Oshkosh to the win, scoring touchdowns of 49 and 79 yards and the long 94 yard kick return. 

Stout started the game by taking the opening possession 69 yards on 13 plays that lasted six and a half minutes before stalling on fourth down at the Oshkosh six yard line. The teams traded punts and the Blue Devils opened the second quarter with an impressive  17 play 90 yard drive, chewing up 7:58 of the clock that resulted in a nine yard touchdown reception by Arthur Cox to put Stout up 7-0.

Oshkosh opened up the third quarter with a quick four play 79 yard drive that ended with a 49 yard touchdown catch by Trae Tezlaff. The ensuing PAT was missed and the Blue Devils led 7-6. 

Stout tried to respond marching the ball down the field on anther long possession that stalled out on the one yard line. Three plays later Tezlaff scored his second touchdown of the day on a 79 yard reception to put Oshkosh up 13-7. 

The Blue Devil defense forced a turnover 22 yards later Chase Hughes rumbled into the endzone from two yards out to put Stout back in the lead with 12:20 left in the game. 

The Stout momentum was short lived as Oshkosh took the kickoff 94 yards to retake the lead 19-14. 

Stout had two more chances to retake the lead but had to punt and then turned the ball over on downs with four minutes left and Oshkosh was able to run out the clock. 

Stout quarterback Sean Borgerding finished the game 28 of 39 for 239 yards. He also rushed for 46 yards. His 239 yards moved him to first all-time in career passing yards with 8,987. He is also the school record holder in most completions with 669. 

Hughes rushed for 100 yards on 22 carries. 

Stout will return home to host UW-Platteville on Oct. 29. Kick-off from Don and Nona Williams Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
