UW-La Crosse 89, UW-Stout 85
MENOMONIE (January 5, 2022) - UW-Stout held the lead through much of the first half into the second half, but saw UW-La Crosse chip away to take a lead in the second half. The Blue Devils came back to within one possession late in the game but fell to the 11th-ranked Eagles, 89-85, Wednesday on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse.
Led
Armani Tinsley, Stout (10-4, 1-2 WIAC) led throughout the first half behind Tinsley's 17 first half points. The senior dropped in five 3-pointers before the break and Stout led at intermission, 46-40.
The Eagles (10-2, 1-2 WIAC) continued a charge in the second half they began in the first half and chipped away at Stout's lead, eventually capturing the lead, 55-54, with 12:58 left in the second half. The Eagles continued their push, building up a lead by as much 11 points, 65-54, at the midway mark of the half. The Blue Devils used an 11-2 run to pull to within two, 69-67, at 7:09. LaCrosse kept Stout at arms length, taking the lead back up to eight points, 81-73, with three minutes to play.
The Blue Devils again started to whittle away and Stout pulled to within 85-83 on a 3-pointer by
Lovell Williams with 30 seconds remaining in the game. Free throws finished out the game. The Eagles' Ethan Anderson made a pair, and Stout's Ciriacks made two throws to again make it a two-point game. With less than five seconds remaining, the Eagles Henry Noone sealed the win with two free throws and the final score.
The Eagles' Anderson led all scorers with 25 points. Noone added 16 points, Wyatt Cook 14 and Austin Westra and Torin Hannah 10 points each.
Stout was led by Tinsley with 24 points.
Lovell Williams tallied 22 points and
Jon Ciriacks collected his first double-double of the season with 17 and 10 rebounds.
The Eagles shot 49.2 percent (31-63) for the game, 35.3 percent (6-17) from 3-point range and 77.8 percent (21-27) from the line. Stout shot 41.8 percent (28-67) from the field, 38.7 percent (12-31) from 3-point land and 70.8 percent (17-24) from the free throw line.
Stout out-rebounded La Crosse, 42-33. Ciriacks' 10 rebounds was matched by the Eagles' Sean Suchomel.
Drew Scott pulled down eight rebounds for Stout and Williams had six.
Stout will be at UW-Platteville Saturday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.
