UW-Stout 63, UW-Stevens Point 61

MENOMONIE (January 19, 2022) - Freshman Reagan Sorensen connected on a buzzer-beater to seal the win for Stout against UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday night in Johnson Fieldhouse. Stout (9-7, 4-2) played from behind the whole game as Stevens Point (9-5, 2-3) jumped out to a quick lead. The Blue Devils continued to stay on the heels of the Pointers before finally taking the lead with only a minute left. The Pointers were able to tie it back up at 61 a piece, but Sorensen nailed a jumper from around the left elbow as time expired to end the Pointers hope for overtime.

Stevens Point started the game missing only two shots, which led to a 12-4 led at the first media timeout. The Blue Devils were able to find their rhythm quickly though, and finished out the first quarter on their own 8-3 run. The second quarter was back and forth, as Stout and Stevens Point traded shots, but when the halftime buzzer rang, it was the Pointers leading 29-24.

Stevens Point started to pull away in the third quarter, extending their lead to nine, but the story of the night came at the hands of a huge fourth quarter Stout run. Down by 10, the Blue Devils battled back with some huge offensive rebounds which led to points. Finally, with a minute remaining, all the hard work paid off as a Lizzy Olsem connected on a jump shot which put Stout in the lead, 58-57. With time winding down, and intentional foul sent Amanda Giesen to the line. Giesen connected on two free throws, to give Stout it's biggest led of the night at 61-58. Point's Kelly McIntrye connected on a 3-ball with only 12 seconds left on the clock, tying the game at 61-61. The Pointer's looked hopeful about sending the game into overtime, but Stout's leading scorer, Freshman Reagan Sorensen, ended all of those hopes as Lauren Arenz found her on an inbounds play to seal the win for Stout.
