MORRIS, Minn. (September 19, 2021) - UW-Stout got the game-winning and the game-clinching goals from sisters
Lexi Boyd and
Lauren Boyd as the Blue Devils got back on the winning track with a 4-2 win - with all Stout goals coming by freshmen - over the University of Minnesota-Morris Sunday.
With Stout leading 2-1,
Lexi Boyd scored her third goal of the season, taking an assist from
Marissa Steele in the 57th minute, for the eventual game-winning goal. Ten minutes later,
Lauren Boyd scored her first collegiate goal when she scored unassisted in the 67th minute with a blast high into the net.
Stout (6-0-1) opened the scoring in the game when
Carly Kauffman took a pass from
Caylee Boone and dribbled around the goalkeeper in the 18th minute. Five minutes later, the Cougars (0-5-0) answered back on a goal by Kim Peters.
Stout took the 2-1 lead early in the second half when
Liv Winkler, assisted by Steele, scored her fourth goal of the season, this one coming in the 51st minute. The Cougars scored a goal in the 79th minute for the final score.
While all four goals came from freshmen, it was seniors that supplied the assists, with Boone recording one and Steele two. Boone ran her assists total to three for the season, while Steele has recorded five assists so far. With the win, Stout surpassed their win totals from the previous season.
The Blue Devils defense held Morris to only three total shots with only two on goal, both piercing the net.
Haley Vokaty recorded no saves. Cougars goalkeeper Bernadette Cienik made 13 stops and there was one team save as Stout put 18 shots on frame, a season high. Winkler and
Lexi Boyd each had five shots on net, while Kauffman, Steele and
Remy Soulak each had three shots on net.
Stout will have the school week off from competition and will play a pair of non-conference games next weekend. The Blue Devils will be at Viterbo University, Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m., then return home to begin a four-game homestand by hosting St. Mary's University, Sunday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m..
