LAST TIME OUT: UW-STEVENS POINT: Stevens Point (2-0) found the end zone on three of its first four possessions and the Pointers got a 34-7 win at Simpson (0-2) on Saturday. UWSP dominated both sides of the ball.  The Pointers rushed for 311 yards and outgained the Storm 527-187 on offense.  UWSP's defense held Simpson to just 19 rushing yards. Max Herro threw two touchdown passes and punter Carter Unger connected for one of his own.  Devin Baldridge (Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire), Joe Hare and Kameron Kryzanski were the recipients of the TD passes. On the ground, Vercion Gammel racked up 127 yards on 19 carries.  Seth Forbes and Jermaine Moore Jr. found the end zone on the ground. The Pointers appeared to be stopped on the first offensive possession.  But Unger tossed a pass to Kryzanski, who completed the 65-yard scamper to the end zone as UWSP took a 7-0 lead. Gammel picked up chunks of yards on the next possession including a 33-yard run that put the Pointers in the red zone.  Moore finished the task with a six-yard run to pay dirt and a 14-0 lead. Herro found Baldridge on the first play of the second quarter and UWSP was soundly in front, 21-0. Jawahn Downing got the ball back moments later with an interception and return into Simpson territory.  Herro connected with Hare on the next play and UWSP was on top 27-0. QB Borgerding moved up to sixth on the all-time passing list, surpassing Forrest Schneider (4992). Borgerding has completed 372 of 678 passes for 5073 yards with 44 TDs thrown, placing him fourth on the all-time TD thrown list ahead of Gale Woelffer (1948-51).

PRESEASON POLLS: The Blue Devils finished in a fifth in the competitive WIAC in 2019 and according to a preseason poll by WIAC football coaches and sports information directors, the Blue Devils are picked to finish fifth in 2021. UW-Whitewater is picked to finish first, UW-Oshkosh second, UW-Platteville third, UW-La Crosse fourth, UW-Stout fifth, UW-Stevens Point sixth, UW-Eau Claire seventh and UW-River Falls eighth.

WHO'S WHO: UW-STEVENS POINT: Quarterback Max Herro took over the starting job the final five games of the 2018 season and started the opener in 2019 before suffering a season ending injury.  He is back healthy and poised to resume where he left off in 2018 throwing for more than 1000 yards and eight touchdowns in his five starts. Herro currently has tossed the ball for 368 yards, going 27 of 50 with five TDs. The Pointers' backfield will have a bit of a different look since the last game in 2019.  Vercion Gammel has emerged as a fast and physical option to begin the season.  Gammel is averaging 6.4 yards per carry and has 198 yards on 31 carries. Seth Forbes also has risen on the depth chart to be a key out of the backfield.  Gammel and Forbes, although in their second and third years at UWSP, are poised to play their first game with the Pointers this season.  Jeffrey Williams and Jermaine Moore, Jr. provided quality depth at running back. The UWSP defense is arguably the strength of the team, a pair of all-conference selections in Berkley Corvino and Kameron Kryzanski leading the way.  |  Statistics

STOUT FOOTBALL HISTORY: Stout Institute played their first game on Nov. 4, 1911, when they lost to River Falls Normal School, 13-11. Walter Anderson scored Stout's first touchdown, an 85 yard kickoff return. A week later, Stout won their first game, 30-2, against LaCrosse Business School as Harvey Tice scored four touchdowns. The predecessor to the WIAC began in 1913 and Stout has won five conference titles - 1921, 1941, 1949, 1965 and 2000. Stout became the Blue Devils during the late 1920s or early 1930s. Football was not played during the war years of 1918, 1943, and 1944. Along the way, the school has gone through a number of name changes - Stout Institute, Stout State College, Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Stout celebrated 100 years of football with a season-long celebration and alumni reunion during the 2011 season. | A 10-week series on Stout football is available.

TAILGATING: UW-Stout has adopted a formal tailgating policy for Blue Devil football games. The south end of the parking lot by the Don and Nona Williams Stadium has been designated as a tailgating area known as the "Tailgate Zone." Fans will be able to participate in the Blue Devil Walk. Tailgating is permitted three hours before the game, and tailgating activities will cease at game time. Only propane grills are permitted, no open flame grills. Tobacco is not permitted.

UP NEXT: The Blue Devils will have a bye next week and will begin to prepare for the WIAC opener when they travel to UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Oct. 2.
