MENOMONIE (July 8, 2021) - Team awards for the 2020-21 UW-Stout hockey season were announced recently.
Raphael Gosselin (Jr, Quebec City, Quebec) was selected as the offensive player of the year,
Joey Petronack (Fr, White Bear Lake, Minn/Hill-Murray) the defensive player of the year and
Zack Cloutier (Fr, Val-D'Or, Quebec) was the rookie of the year.
Alec Skar (Jr, Forest Lake, Minn) received the community service award and
Jacob Halvorson (Fr, Lonsdale, Minn/Northfield) the academic achievement award.
Gosselin was a first-team All-WIAC selection after leading the team in scoring with four goals and seven assists. Gosselin ranked third in the WIAC in points (11) and third for points by a forward. His four goals were tied for 10th in the conference and his seven assists tied for fourth. Gosselin scored a goal and two assists in a season-opening 5-1 win over UW-River Falls and he tallied the game-winning-goal and an assist in a 4-1 win over UW-Stevens Point.
Petronack, a freshman, was an All-WIAC honorable mention selection and was one of the scoring leaders among conference defensemen, chipping in a goal and dishing off five assists - third on the team - for six points. Petronack scored his goal on the power play against UW-Eau Claire. Petronack scored at least one point in six of the 11 games.
Cloutier earned first team all-WIAC honors and finished the season with a school single season goals against average (GAA) record of 1.63, a mark that was second in the conference. Clouiter started four games and saw action in five games, recording a saves percentage of .943 and a 3-1 overall record. Cloutier earned Kwik Trip/WIAC athlete of the week honors after recording two wins over Northland College, including a 1-0 shutout.
Skar received the community service award after serving as a coach with a Menomonie Youth Hockey Association (MYHA) squirt teams that went on to win a state title. A defender, Skar appeared in all 11 games and scored two assists. Halvorson earned the academic achievement award. A freshman majoring in applied mathematics and computer science, Halvorson played in six games.
The season consisted of 11 games due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was the first year for
Mike MacDonald as head coach. The Blue Devils are scheduled to open the 2021-22 season by hosting Bethel University, Friday, Oct. 29, and Concordia-Wisconsin Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Fanetti Community Center. Stout will open conference play by traveling to Northland College, Thursday, Nov. 18.
