UW-Stout 11, Finlandia 1 (7 inn)
MENOMONIE (May 14, 2021) -
James Palmer struck out 11 and combined with
Ethan Kjellberg for a first game 9-0 shutout and
Jace Baumann went what would prove to be the distance as UW-Stout completed the first day sweep over Finlandia University with an 11-1, 7-inning win Friday at Nelson Field.
Palmer (6-3) worked the first six innings of the opener, allowing two hits and three walks, while striking out 11 batters to match a season-high. Kjellberg worked the last three innings of the contest, striking out one and allowing no hits or runs.
Stout (19-17, 14-12 WIAC) scored five runs in the fifth inning and added single runs in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings.
Dan Deis and
Joel Thimsen each had three RBI and
Alex Jinkins brought in two. Stout finished with 13 hits.
In the nightcap, Stout took advantage of three second inning errors by Finlandia (0-35, 0-26 WIAC) and scored seven runs in the stanza. Leading 9-1 at the time, the Blue Devils ended the game in the seventh after
Riley Boushack hit a one-out single to right and came home when
Charlie Szykowny tripled to the right field corner. Szykowny came home on Jinkins' single to center field.
Baumann (2-4) worked all seven innings, fanning five, while scattering seven hits and one earned run.Â
Jinkins was 3 for 5 with two RBI.
Kasey Bass finished with a pair of RBI.
Reese Vold was 2 for 4 with a double and
Joel Thimsen was 2 for 3.Â
The teams are scheduled to square off again Saturday, May 15 at 12 p.m.
