Stout breaks out early in second game to earn split with Eagles

MENOMONIE (April 28, 2021) - UW-Stout opened up the second game with UW-La Crosse with four straight hits in the first inning and scored four runs in the stanza to take a 4-3 win over the Eagles Wednesday at Alumni Field. The Blue Devils were coming off a 9-3 first game loss. 

The first game was a postponement from earlier this month and was a conference game. La Crosse was designated the home team in the game. The second game was a regular non-conference game. 

Jessica Christiansen and Shannon Jones led off the second game with infield singles. Christiansen came home on Kaylee Peterson's RBI single and Jones was plated on Meghan Kelly's single. Addison Murry reached on an error with two outs, allowing two more runs to score and Stout (5-18, 0-10 WIAC) led 4-0.

Four Blue Devil pitchers allowed only four hits and four runs by the Eagles. Starter Maddie Kleinschmidt went three innings, striking out six, before getting into trouble in the fourth inning.

Jordan Caby earned her first collegiate win. 
The Eagles (10-11, 6-4 WIAC) scored two runs in the fifth inning, pulling to within 4-2. Sommer Kunstmann came on midway through the sixth inning, allowing one run in the seventh, but left one runner stranded to earn her first save of her career since her freshman season. Jordan Caby worked 1.1 innings, allowing one hit, striking out one and allowing no runs to get credit for her first collegiate win.

Stout recorded seven hits, with seven different runners recording a hit, including Aliyah Smetana, who opened the third with a double.

In the opener, Stout drew first blood when Kelly doubled in Kaylee Peterson. The Eagles answered back in the bottom of the first, then doubled their lead with a run in the second.

Stout took the 3-2 lead with two-run third inning. Christiansen opened with a single and moved to second on Korin Hall's bunt single. A double by Jones brought home Christiansen and Kelly recorded her second RBI of the game on a single to right field. 

The Eagles broke the game open in the fifth inning with a seven-run outburst, highlighted by Synde Shattuck's grand slam. 

Stout rolled up seven hits, with Jones and Kelly going 2 for 3. The Eagles got two hits each by Sabrina Scardamaglia, Shattuck and Emily Knight.

Stout continues their five date homestand when they host UW-Oshkosh, Friday, April 30 at 4 p.m. in a conference game, then will host UW-Platteville, Saturday, May 1 at 2 p.m.
