MENOMONIE (December 4, 2021) - The Blue Devils scored two unanswered goals in the third period to down the Yellow Jackets of UW-Superior (5-4-0, 3-2-0 WIAC). UW-Stout (3-7-0, 3-1-0 WIAC) earns their first home win of the season after winning tonights contest 4-3.
Tyler Masternak came into the game 13:24 of the first period and did not allow a goal.
In the first period, both teams came out skating and firing on all cylinders. At 4:59 of the period, Stout took a penalty and during the delayed penalty, Superior brought out an extra attacker. During the six on five, Yellow Jacket's Dylan Johnson took a shot and got it passed Kitchen to take an early 1-0 lead. Austin Friesen and Bradley Stonnell assisted on the goal.
After the goal, Stout went on the power play and Superior took advantage with an extra attacker again. Superior's Dylan Johnson scored his second goal of the night with assists from Artur Terchiyev and Chad Lopez on the power play goal.
But the Blue Devils didn't back down as Stout's
Cole Beckstead scored only 30 seconds after the Yellow Jackets goal.
Matt Dahlseide assisted on the goal and the scoreboard read 2-1 in favor of Superior.
At 13:24 of the period, Superior's Gavin Rasmussen put the Yellow Jackets back up two when he batted the puck in the back of the net out of mid air. WIll Blake and Levi Cudmore assisted on the goal.
At 15:57 of the first period, Stout's
Dylan Rallis got the Blue Devils within one goal as he beat Myles Hektor.
Logan Nelson made a back door pass and Rallis brought it home.
Cole Beckstead also assisted on the goal.
In the first intermission, score was 3-2 in favor of the Yellow Jackets. The Yellow Jackets out shot Stout in the first period, 12-10.
The second period didn't see as much action for goals, but the opportunities were there for both teams. Superior had four shots in the first 1:30, but couldn't get the puck in the net.
At 7:37 of the period, Superior had a chance at the power play, but the Blue Devils killed off the penalty and skated full strength.
After two periods, the shots were 29-21 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.
In the third period, at the 4:50 mark, Stout's
Alex Nagel tied the game up after a back door goal.
Raphael Gosselin and
Kobe Keller each got an assist on the game tying goal.
Just under two minutes of the tying goal, Blue Devil's
Riley Enderle shot the puck from the point and got it passed Hektor to give the Blue Devils their first lead of the game.
Landon Lushanko and
Peter Verstegen got the assists on the game winning goal.
With 2:45 left in the game, the Yellow Jackets took out Hektor to skate six on five. But the Blue Devils used good defense and goaltending to hang on for their first home win on the season.
Brennan Kitchen started the game and had five saves.
Tyler Masternak came in goal in the first period and had 31 saves without allowing a goal. Superior's Myles Hektor finished the game with 25 saves.
Up next for the Blue Devils is a matchup against UW-River Falls at home Saturday, December 11 with puck drop at 7:00 p.m.
