MENOMONIE (December 13, 2021) - UW-Stout broke the single-game scoring record, held since 1971, surviving the top scoring team of the NCAA Division III, Greenville University, 125-119, on Monday night at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The Blue Devils (8-2, 1-1) knew coming into the game that Greenville (1-8) was going to play fast and hard. From the tip, Greenville was putting up the three-ball nearly every time down the court. Stout did their best to match the Panther's high-paced offensive, but fell behind quickly, as Greenville went on a eight-point run early in the first half, which put them up by 11-points. That 11-point Greenville lead was the most by both teams. Stout adjusted after the media timeout, and finished out the first quarter with their own nine-point run.
Going into the second half, Stout was down by three. But some high flying dunks by
Brody Fox kept the Blue Devils in the game. Fox had 25 points in the second half alone. The Blue Devils took the lead with nine minutes left in the game and extended their lead to nine. Stout only had the lead for 13 minutes of the entire game, but the last nine minutes of the game was all they needed to pull off the win.
Stout broke the single-game scoring record with 125 points. The previous record was 124 points which had been achieved twice, once in 1971 and then in 1986. This game was also the highest scoring game Stout has been a part of, as both teams combined for 244 points. The previous record was 221 which was set in 1986, where Stout lost to Oshkosh, 111 to 110.
Some other Stout record were close to being broken too.
Lovell Williams was one assist shy of the 14-assist game from Brian Ellingson against Northland in 1986 (L. Williams had 13).
Brody Fox needed only one more point to tie the school record of
43 points set by Chris Korba against UW-Oshkosh in 1991 (Fox had 42). Fox is now tied on the single game scoring list with Luther Forrest (vs. UW-Oshkosh, Feb. 14, 1987) and Bill Heidemann (vs. River Falls State, Dec. 20, 1967)
Fox also got the honors to break the Stout scoring record when he scored two free throws with 15 seconds remain to push Stout over the school record of 124. Stout was also one assist shy of total assists as a team with 36. The previous record of 37 was set in 1986 against Marian College.
Stout had six players in double digits, led by Fox. Williams had 14 points, Drew Scott and Armani Tinsley each had 16 points, Nick Jungel had 14 points and Jon Ciriacks had 11. Fox can claim that he recorded a triple-double as he had 13 rebounds and 10 fouls drawn.
The Panthers, who led the country by averaging 113.1 points per game, also had six players in double figures, led by Romello Ball's 19 points. Chris Jackson had 11 rebounds for the Panthers.
The Panthers shot 44 of 120 from the field (36.7 percent), 20 of 67 from 3-point range (29.9 percent) and 11 of 16 from the line (68.8 percent). The Blue Devils shot 46 of 77 from the field (68.4 percent), 4 of 12 from 3-point range (33.3 percent) and 29 of 41 from the line (70.7 percent). Stout was forced into a season-high 37 turnovers, while the Panthers committed 15.
Stout was active on the boards, and with all the shots that were put up, it was a good thing. Stout pulled down 68 rebounds while only allowing Greenville 49. Jon Ciriacks and Drew Scott each pulled down 8 rebounds. L. Williams was one rebound shy of getting his own triple double, finishing with 14 points, 13 assists, and nine rebounds.
Stout will return on Tuesday, December 21, for a match-up against the visiting Finlandia Unviersity. This game will tip off after the women's game finishes as a part of Stout's annual School Day games.
