Stout jumps out early over Bethel, go on to 96-79 win

DUBUQUE, Iowa (November 13, 2021) - UW-Stout used a strong final six minutes of the first quarter and went on to a 96-79 win over Bethel University on the second day of the Loras College Tip-Off Saturday.

The Blue Devils, coming off their first loss of the season the previous night, fell behind early in the opening stanza, but bolted out to a 10-point lead by the end of the period with a 12-2 run in the final six minutes to take a 24-14 lead at the buzzer. Bethel (1-2), which received votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll, never got closer than 10 points during the remainder of the game.

Stout (2-1) had four players finish in double digits with Lizzy Olsem scoring a career-best and game-high 18 points. Anna Mutch recorded a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Amanda Giesen, who had 16 points the night before, finished with 13 points. Sam Schaeffer also finished with a career-best, tossing in 13 points. 

Stout held a 43-33 halftime lead and a 75-60 lead at the end of the third period.

The Blue Devils shot a very nice 62.7 percent from the field, hitting 37 of 59 field goals. The Blue Devils did not need to hit from 3-point range and made 2 of 4 long range shots. Stout made 20 of 33 free throws. The 96 points scored was the most points in a single game since Stout scored 99 points against UW-Platteville, Feb. 20, 2016.

The Royals were led by Courtney Nuest with 17 points. Makenna Pearson scored 16 points and Megan Boegel 13. The Royals shot 43.3 percent from the field, hitting 29 of 67 attempts. Bethel was 4 of 12 from 3-point range and 17 of 21 from the line.

The Blue Devils held a 36-29 lead in rebounds. Haylee Yaeger had six rebounds and Olsem five to complement Mutch off the boards.

Stout return to action Wednesday, Nov. 17 when they host Wartburg College at 7 p.m. in the first home game of the season.
