UW-Stout 71, Wartburg College 91
MENOMONIE (November 17, 2021) - The UW-Stout women's basketball team dropped their first home game of the season to 10th-ranked Wartburg College, 91-71 Wednesday night at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The Blue Devils (2-2, 0-0 WIAC) fought a long, hard game against the Knights (2-0, 0-0 ARC), but Wartburg's hot shooting gave them the boost to come out with the win.
Stout's defense stepped up after the short break, limiting the Knights to only one 3-ball in the second quarter. The spark in defense also helped Stout on offense, as they were able to score 13 unanswered points to narrow the lead to just 12 going into the half.
Sam Schaeffer finished off the half with a beautiful 3-point floater at the buzzer. Schaeffer then went on to open up the second half with yet another 3-pointer. She finished the game with 14 points shooting 6 for 11.
Coming out of the break, the Blue Devils were able to go on another little run. Kick-started by an
Amanda Giesen 3-pointer, the Blue Devils went on a 10-5 run and were within seven points of the Knights, 57-50, midway through the quarter. But the momentum shifted back over for the Knights, as Jaedon Murphy nailed a 3-pointer with an assist from Macy Harris. Harris then stole the ball and finished at the rim to extend the lead back to 12. After that, the Knights went 17-2 run to finish out the quarter. Murphy finished the game with a career-high 36 points and nine rebounds. Harris had eight points and four steals and Britney Young had 11 and six assists.
While the Blue Devils were able to capitalize in the paint scoring 38 of their points there, it wasn't enough for the red-hot Knights, as they finished 45-percent from behind the arc (13-29).
The Blue Devils were led by Giesen and
Anna Mutch. Giesen finished with 13 points, five rebounds, and two blocks, playing a very well-rounded game.
Anna Mutch, fresh off her tournament MVP award at the Loras Tip-Off, was aggressive on the boards, finishing with a Stout-high eight rebounds. Mutch also led the team in scoring with 17 points and steals with three.
Stout will return to Johnson Fieldhouse on Saturday, Nov. 20, for their next game, taking on the third-ranked Trine Thunder. The game will tip-off at 1 p.m.
