UW-Oshkosh 43, UW-Stout 36
MENOMONIE (October 30, 2021) -
In a game that had eight different lead changes, UW-Oshlkosh scored a 68-yard touchdown on a fourth and three with only 14 seconds left to top UW-Stout 43-36 Saturday at Williams Stadium.
UW-Oshkosh (5-2, 3-2) received the first half kickoff and got a quick first down on their second play of the game. After the first down, UW-Stout (5-3, 2-3) stopped Oshkosh and forced them to punt.
In the first possession for the Blue Devils, Stout marched down the field for nine plays and 83 yards.
Sean Borgerding handed it off to
Matt Pomietlo, Pomietlo handed it off to
Arthur Cox, and Cox flipped it to Borgerding who threw it to a wide open
Levy Hamer to score the first touchdown of the game.
Luke Cool's kick made it a 7-0 game in favor of the Blue Devils.
In the second quarter, Oshkosh attempted a 17 yard field goal, but Stout got a hand on the ball and the field goal attempt was no good.
At 7:29 of the second quarter, Titan's Peter MacCudden caught a 21 yard pass from Kobe Berghammer to get Oshkosh on the scoreboard. Kiesner extra point made the score 7-7.
With only 1:55 left in the second quarter, Oshkosh took only four plays and a 72 yard drive to get another score. Justin Kasuboski caught a pass in the endzone by Kobe Berghammer to take the lead.
As time was ticking down to halftime, Stout tried a 45 yard field goal attempt.
Jack Meyer's field goal attempt was good, but a flag against Oshkosh gave the Blue Devils a first down. After the penalty,
Matt Pomietlo ran into the endzone and a Cool kick tied the game at 14-14 going into halftime.
With 5:40 left in the third quarter, Stout's
Levy Hamer received a 17 yard dart from
Sean Borgerding to have the Blue Devils take the lead.
But on the next possession, Oshkosh marched down the field in six plays and 65 yards. Trae Tetzlaff received a pass from Berghammer to tie the game at 21.
The fourth quarter had a lot more scoring and action. Oshkosh took the lead with 11:11 to go in the game when Mitch Gerhartz scampered into the endzone. But the extra point was missed and the score was now 27-21.
The last four minutes of play saw four touchdowns, two by each team.
With 3:44 left to go in the game, Stout's
Will Knutson made a juggling catch in the endzone to make the game tied. Cool's extra point gave the Blue Devils the lead at 28-27.
The next possession, Oshkosh took two plays in 70 yards into the endzone as Berghammer ran for 28 yards to get into the endzone. The two point conversion for the Titans was good and the Blue Devils were down 7 again.
The next possession for the Blue Devils didn't go quite their way as they punted on four plays. With time running out in the game, Stout made a huge stop on fourth down to get the ball back with just under three minutes remaining in the game.
With 1:12 left on the clock,
Arthur Cox caught a pass in the endzone from Borgerding to give the Blue Devils a chance to tie or go for the lead. Stout chose to go for two points and Borgerding found Cox in the back of the endzone again to take the lead at 36-35.
But the Titans didn't back down. On a fourth and three on their own 32 yard line, Berghammer threw a bomb to Tony Steger and Steger ran into the endzone for a 68 yard touchdown with only 14 seconds left to make the game 43-36 in favor of the Titans.
The Blue Devils had one more chance to find the endzone on a hail mary, but the Titan's Brandon Kolgen sacked Borgerding with no time remaining.
Sean Borgerding finished the game with 295 passing yards to go along with four touchdowns. Kobe Berghammer had 240 yards passing and four touchdowns.
Berghammer also led the Titans rushing attack with 189 rushing yards and a touchdown. Blue Devil's
Matt Pomietlo led the team with 116 yards including a touchdown.
Levy Hamer led Stout in receiving yards with 11 receptions on 161 yards and two touchdowns. Titan's Trae Tony Steger led in receiving with 92 yards and a touchdown.
Stout's
Cannon Griner finished the game with 16 total tackles.
Haydon Miller had seven tackles including a sack.
