PLATTEVILLE (March 31, 2019) - UW-Stout put on a ninth-inning rally in the second game, but the Blue Devils came up one run short as UW-Platteville earned the sweep Sunday wins of 4-1 and 7-6 at Kendall-Murray Field.
On a cold and blustery day in Platteville, Stout (6-5, 1-3 WIAC) came into the top of the ninth trailing 7-4, but seemed to gain the momentum with back-to-back singles by pinch hitter
Joel Thimsen and
Kasey Bass. The bases loaded when
Ben Vanhove drew a walk and Thimsen came home on
Kyle Hamilton's groundout to second base.
Alex Jinkins hit into a fielder's choice to plate Bass and Stout pulled to within one run. But a deep flyout to center field ended Stout's comeback bid.
After losing the first game, Stout opened the nightcap with a two-run first inning on RBIs by Bass and Jinkins. The Pioneers (7-9, 3-1 WIAC) got one run back in the bottom of the inning, but Stout stretched the lead to 3-1 in the second inning when
Jared Jarvensivu drove in
Danny Deis. Platteville made it 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the second then took a three-run lead by scoring four runs in the sixth inning. Deis hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to make it 6-4. Platteville added another run in the bottom of the eighth when Jon Kelso drove in what would prove to be the game-winning run.
Bass was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Jordan Wilson was 2-for-4. Jinkins recorded two RBI, while going 0-for-2.
In the opener, the Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings. The Blue Devils left two runners on base in the first inning, but Platteville scored a run in their half of the first after Jonathon Kelso hit a one-out single, then stole second and third base and came home on an infield groundout.
The Blue Devils did not help their own cause in the second inning, committing two errors that ultimately led to two Pioneer runs and a 3-0 Platteville lead.
Stout got on the board in the third inning when
Jordan Wilson drew a one-out walk, moved to second on
Kasey Bass' groundout and scored on
Caleb Hurt's single to left field. The Pioneers made it 4-1 with a single run in the fourth inning, but left the bases loaded. Stout left runners in scoring position in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning.
Platteville recorded nine hits to seven for Stout. The Pioneers left 14 runners on base, while Stout left nine runners. Wilson and
Kyle Hamilton each recorded two hit. Kelso was 4-for-5 for the Pioneers and Sam Behm and Logan Kozak both had two hits.
