SUN PRAIRIE (April 6, 2019) - UW-Stout evened their conference record by rolling over Finlandia University, 9-0, 6-1, Saturday at Summit Field in Sun Prairie.
The Blue Devils pounded out 15 hits in the opener and
Jack Donahue pitched seven innings of three-hit ball to notch the win. Donahue allowed only one base runner as far as second base, and struck out five batters. Donahue faced only three batters in the first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Stout (8-5, 3-3 WIAC) scored three runs in the third inning, then scored at least one run in the next three innings, including a four-run fifth inning.
In the third,
Joel Thimsen,
Caleb Hurt and
Alex Jinkins each drove in a run. Sun Praire's own,
Kasey Bass, drove in a single run in the fourth inning.
Jared Jarvensivu cracked his second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the four-run fifth. Thimsen and Hurt each recorded their second RBI of the game in the fifth inning, Thimsen on a bases-loaded walk and Hurt with a single.
Stout added an additional run in the sixth inning on Charlie Szykowney's sacrifice fly.
Cooper Beving and
Alex Mahaz worked the eighth and ninth inning, respectively. Both recorded a strikeout and neither allowed a hit.or a runner on base.
Jordan Wilson was 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two doubles.Jarvensivu was 3-for-5 with two RBI. Szykowny was 2-for-4 and Hurt was 2-for-5.
In the nightcap,
Brad Rindfleisch recorded nine strikeouts over six innings pitched to get the win.
Brandon Bohl earned his first collegiate save, allowing two hits and striking out four over the final three innings of the game. Bohl entered the game with Stout leading 4-1.
Stout scored two runs in the first inning.
Danny Deis drove in a run and Thimsen scored when Jarvensivu reached safely on an infield error. Bass's single in the second scored Sykowny to give Stout a 3-0 lead.
The Lions (3-15, 0-6 WIAC) scored their first run of the day in the fifth inning, but Stout got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Deis plated Thimsen.
With Bohl on the mound, the Blue Devils gave the reliever a pair of of insurance runs in the eighth inning.
Bass was 2-for-5. Thimsen, Hurt and Szykowny each were 2-for-4. Stout finished the game with 10 hits to seven for the Lions.
The weekend series was moved to Sun Prairie when Nelson Field was still feeilng the affects of the winter. The teams will meet again on Sunday, April 7 at noon.
