Blue Devils bounce back to earn split at MacMurray

MacMurray 4, UW-Stout 3 | UW-Stout 11, MacMurray 4

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. (March 23, 2019) - UW-Stout unleashed a 16-hit offensive onslaught in the second game to earn a split at MacMurray College, Saturday, losing the first game, 4-3, but coming back with an 11-4 win in the nightcap of the nine inning doubleheader.

The Blue Devils (3-1) second, third and fourth batters led the offensive parade, combining for nine of the Blue Devils' 16 hits.

Jordan Wilson went 3 for 5, Hunter Merrill was 4 for 6 with three RBI and Kasey Bass was 2 of 5 with two RBI. Eight of Stout's starters had at least one hit. Caleb Hurt, batting in the sixth spot, was 2 for 5.

The Blue Devils jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by Bass and added three more runs in the third inning. The Blue Devils racked up six runs on six hits in the eighth inning, getting all six hits and runs after the first two batters were out as Stout sent 11 batters to the plate.  Merrill and Hurt each drove in two runs in the inning.

Brad Rindfleisch picked up the win in 6.1 innings of work as he struck out six. MacMurray scored twice in the fifth and twice in the seventh.  The Blue Devils ground through eight Highlander pitchers.

In game one, MacMurray (3-9)  scored a single run in the first, then added two more runs in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.

The Blue Devil bats came to life in the fifth inning to answer the Highlanders, and they all came after two outs. Kyle Hamilton drew a one-out walk, then moved to second on Jared Jarvensivu's groundout. Reid Akerman's double brought home Hamilton. Akerman moved on Ben Vanhove's infield single. Vanhove put runners on second and third with a stolen base and Akerman scored when Kasey Bass reached on an infield error.

MacMurray would score what would prove to be the game winner in the bottom of the fifth. Stout answered back when Akerman lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Hunter Merrill, who had led off the inning with a single, then stole second and moved to third on Hamilton's bunt single. But Stout would leave the bases loaded, then left two on in the seventh inning.

Akerman was 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored to lead Stout, which recorded seven hits. MacMurray had nine hits. Donahue took the loss, giving up eight hits and all four runs.

Stout will be at Blackburn College Sunday, March 24, and at Millikin University, Monday, March 25.
