ROCHESTER, Minn. (February 23, 2019) - UW-Stout used nearly flawless fielding to earn a sweep of St. Catherine and Loras College in their season openers at the Luther College Dome Games. Stout took advantage of their opponent's errors and defeated St. Kate's, 6-4, in the opener Saturday and followed up with a late evening 7-4 win over Loras.
The Blue Devils (2-0) were outhit in both games, punching out nine hits to 10 hits for St. Catherine and collected eight hits to Loras College's 10 hits. Stout was charged with only one error throughout the evening and that came against St. Catherine. The Wildcats matched their score with four errors, while the Duhawks committed three.
Against St. Kate's (1-1), Stout fell behind 3-0, giving up a run in the first and two in the third. A four-run fourth inning gave Stout the lead. Malea Bruns led off the inning with a walk, then was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Kaylee Peterson.
Renee Murphy made it runners on the corners with a single to right field.
Jessica Daley doubled to drive in Bruns. Following a strikeout, preseason All-American
Mary Iliopoulos plated Murphy and Daley. Iliopoulos came home on
Meghan Kelly's double
The Wildcats tied the score on Angela Huepf's ground-rule double in the fourth, then threatened in the fifth with runners left on the corners.
The Blue Devils took advantage of three Wildcat errors in the sixth inning to score what would prove to be the winning runs with Daley and
Abby Peterson crossing home plate.
The Wildcats threatened again in the sixth, putting two runners on. Kelly moved from first base to the pitching circle to force three infield outs and strand two runners. Kelly got two flyouts and a strikeout in the seventh.
Against the Duhawks, Stout got all they would need in the first inning. Spotting Loras a 1-0 lead, Stout exploded for a six-run first inning.
Korin Hall led off with her first collegiate hit, then moved to second on Iliopoulos' infield hit. Hall came home on Kelly's left field single. Iliopoulos and Kelly executed a double steal, and
Alicia Meyer loaded the bases when she drew a walk. Following an infield fly out, runners advanced when Daley reached on an error to give Stout a 2-0 lead.

Kaylee Peterson drove in a run and Iliopoulos drove in a run in her second plate appearance of the inning as stout send 10 to the plate.
Loras got a run back in the second and Stout got their final run of the game in the fourth when Kelly led off with a triple and came home on Bruns' ground out.
Loras scored two runs in the seventh inning and left the bases loaded.
For the day, Kelly was 5 of 8 with three RBI, hitting a double and a triple. Iliopoulos was 4 of 7 with three RBI. Daley was 3 of 6 with two RBI.
The Blue Devils are scheduled to play Bethel University and Hamline University, Sunday, Feb. 24.
