RIVER FALLS (February 15, 2019) - UW-River Falls scored three consecutive goals to take a 3-2 first round WIAC Championship (presented by Culvers) game win Friday at Hunt Arena.
The Blue Devils (13-11-2) opened the scoring in the best of two series when
Dmytro Kobylyanskyi scored only 70 seconds into the game, getting assists from
Arturas Laukaitis and
Gavin Smith.
Stout kept the Falcons (11-9-5) scoreless until the four minute mark of the second period when River Falls scored the first of two power play goals in the period. Aussie Miller scored at 4:07 and Peter Karavos scored on the advantage at 10:07.
The Falcons took a 3-1 lead midway through the third period on a goal by Mike Sauer at 9:08.
The Blue Devils pulled to within one goal at 16:20 on a goal by
Conner Valesano, with an assist by
Joe Kleven.
Stout held a 34-24 advantage in shots on goal. The Falcons were 2 for 6 on the power play, while Stout was 0 for 3.
The teams will meet again Saturday, Feb. 16 in River Falls with the puck scheduled to drop at 7:05 p.m. The winner will advance to meet top-ranked UW-Stevens Point, Feb. 22-23. For Stout to advance, they must win Saturday to force a winner-take-all mini-game.
