MENOMONIE (November 2, 2019) - In a back and forth game, defensive back
Cannon Griner sealed the UW-Stout win with an interception late in the fourth quarter and the Blue Devils went on to win 30-24 over UW-River Falls Saturday at Don and Nona Williams Stadium.
With the score tied at 24-24 late in the game, Stout went on a 13-play, 70-yard drive and quarterback
Sean Borgerding capped off the drive with a 2-yard run. After the extra point failed, Stout led 30-24, giving the Falcons added life.
The Falcons Ben Beckman completed a 6-yard pass on first down, but Beckman was picked off by Griner's over-the-shoulder interception and Stout needed to run out the remaining 1-minute, 42-seconds to seal their second straight win.
To start the game, UW-Stout (3-5, 2-3 WIAC) received the kickoff and started on offense. But the UW-River Falls (1-7, 0-5 WIAC) defense forced a three and out and the Blue Devils were forced to punt. On the Falcon's first drive, they took the ball down the field and scored on a long rushing touchdown. Ben Beckman scored for the Falcons on a 41 rushing touchdown.
The next drive, the Blue Devils drove the ball, but ultimately looked at a fourth and 20 on the River Falls 29 yard line. A pass to the endzone was broken up by the Falcon's defense.
River Falls got the ball on a turnover on downs, but two plays later Blue Devil's
Luke Wilz forced a fumble and Stout recovered the ball. Gaining momentum, the Blue Devils scored on their drive as
Sean Borgerding completed a pass to
Levy Hamer for the 25 yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7.
On the Falcon's next drive, River Fall's Bobby Patterson attempted a 44 yard field goal. Stout got through the line and
Aaron Wisecup blocked the kick and the score remained tied.
Stout's offense drove the ball and Borgerding completed another 25 yard touchdown pass to
Levy Hamer to make the score 14-7 with 12:28 left to play in the second quarter.
With both teams fighting to get the next score, it was River Falls who found the endzone as Alex Traxler completed a 46 yard touchdown pass to Ben Beckman and the score was tied at 14-14 with 4:47 left in the half.
After a three and out by the Blue Devils offense, the Falcons got the ball back. River Falls attempted another kick for a 29 yard field goal, but missed wide right. The half ended and the game was tied 14-14 at half time.
The Falcons received the ball to start the second half, but the Blue Devils defense held them to a three and out. On the Blue Devils first drive of the third quarter, Stout took the ball and marched down for 16 plays and 65 yards to score. Borgerding completed a pass to
Parker Fossum for a seven yard touchdown to take the lead.
But on the next play, the Falcon's Beckman completed a 75 yard touchdown pass to Alex Traxler to tie the score up at 21-21 with 4:05 left in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter,
Alec Benzinger kicked a 32 yard field goal for the Blue Devils with 11:13 left to play in the game.
The next drive, River Falls drove the ball, but was looking at a fourth down. Bobby Patterson kicked a 22 yard field goal to tie the game up at 24-24.
With 8:34 left in the game, the Blue Devils used 13 plays to go down the field.
Sean Borgerding ran it in for the two yard touchdown to take the lead. Stout missed the extra point, but was up 30-24.
River Falls was down by six and looking at 2:17 left in the game. But on the second play of their drive, Stout's
Cannon Griner made a nice grab and intercepted Beckman's pass to seal the win. The Blue Devils offense went into victory formation and the game ended at 30-24.
Sean Borgerding had 233 yards through the air and also had three touchdowns. Borgerding also had a rushing touchdown that ended up being the game winning score.
Falcon's Beckman ended with 319 yards passing and had two touchdowns.
Kevion McDonald led the Blue Devils in receiving with 68 yards on eight catches.
Levy Hamer had 67 yards and also had two touchdowns.
Parker Fossum had five catches for 52 yards and a touchdown.
Falcon's Alex Traxler ended the game with 171 yards receiving on eight catches and two touchdowns.
