Augsburg University 3, UW-Stout 2 (OT)
MENOMONIE (January 12, 2019) - UW-Stout took #4 ranked Augsburg University into overtime, but came up short as the Blue Devils fell to the Auggies, 3-2.
Stout (12-5-1) and Augsburg (13-2-2) came out of the locker room fired up as both teams were trying to find their stride. In the first period, both teams had chances, but no goals were accounted for. The period also was even strength for the entire 20 minutes as no penalties were called. Stout out shot the Auggies in the period 13-11.
The second period looked like the previous period, but at 17:54 in the period, Augsburg's Gavin Holland took a shot from the circles and Ben Henderson tipped it in to make the game 1-0. It is Henderson's first goal and point of the season.
But the Blue Devils weren't about to back down as they answered just 30 seconds after the Auggie goal to tie it back up.
Raphael Gosselin scored his third goal of the season when he shot the puck from the point to beat the Auggie goaltender.
Joe Kleven and
Hunter Anderson received assists on the goal. Shots were in favor of the Auggies 9-5 in the second period.
As both teams were trying to break the tie, the first penalty of the game was called at 3:36 of the third period. Stout then went onto the power play, but could not find the back of the net. At 7:22 of the period, Augsburg would send in another guy into the box. During the Stout power play, the Blue Devils sent a guy in the penalty box and both teams would skate four on four. When the Auggies went even strength, Chandler Madry beat
Tommi Ahlgrenon the power play to break the tie and Augsburg would lead 2-1.
With just over 10 minutes left to play in the game, Stout had chances to tie the game back up. At 16:45 of the last period,
Dmytro Kobylyanskyi scored his first goal of the season as he shot from the point and beat the glove of Augsburg's Daniil Gerasimov to tie the game up at 2-2.
Conner Valesano and
Arturas Laukaitis had assists on the game tying goal.
At the 1:47 mark of the overtime period, Augsburg's Tommy Carey scored his sixth goal of the season, beating Ahlgren to seal the win.
Auggie's Daniil Gerasimov ended the game with 25 saves and Stout's
Tommi Ahlgren finished with 22 saves.
Up next for Stout is the last game before conference play starts back up. The Blue Devils will face off against St. Mary's on Thursday, January 17 in Winona, MN.
