Hockey team scores final three goals to down Saint Mary's

UW-Stout 4, Saint Mary's University 2

WINONA, Minn (January 17, 2019) - UW-Stout scored the final three goals of the game to come away with a 4-2 non-conference win at Saint Mary's University Thursday.
 
The Blue Devils (13-5-1) trailed 2-1 at the end of the first period, but scored twice in the second period to take the lead on goals by Alex Nagel and Austin Jackson, then recorded an empty-net goal by Trent Olson to wrap up the win over the Cardinals (3-11-3).
 
Saint Mary's Tyson Liverance scored at 4:26 of the first period, but Stout's Raphael Gosselin knotted the game at 10:43. The Cardinals' Tommy Stang gave his team the one-goal lead at 17:15 heading into the first admission.
 
Nagel scored 11:36 in the second with assists by Gosselin and Jack Cernohous. Jackson scored less than two minutes later, a t the 13:06 mark, with assists by Gavin Smith and Mathias Ahman.  Olson scored with an assist by Lucas Carroll at 18:08.
 
Olson and Joe Kleven assisted on Gosselin's first period power play goal, the freshman's second power play goal of the season. The Blue Devils capitalized on it's only power play opportunity of the evening. 
 
Jack Stang earned two assists for the Cardinals. Tommy Stang assisted on Liverance's first goal of the game.
 
Tommi Ahlgren (11-2-1) earned his 11th win of the season and made 22 saves. Nick Nast garnered 25 saves for the Cardinals.

While the Blue Devils helped an already healthy power play percentage, they stopped four Cardinal power play opportunities to improve on their penalty kill percentage.

The 13 wins are the most wins for the Blue Devil since the 2010-11 season when Stout posted 16 wins. The 2016-17 team recorded 12 wins. 

Stout will resume conference play when they host UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. and UW-Superior, Friday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. This Saturday, Jan. 19, marks the 50th anniversary of the first Stout collegiate game.
