MENOMONIE (January 11, 2019) - It didn't take long for UW-Stout to find the back of the net against Hamline University and used that momentum to secure a 2-1 victory at home.
After scoring five goals on Tuesday, the Blue Devils (12-4-1) kept the momentum going in their matchup against Hamline (2-12-1). It took Stout a little over a minute to score the first goal of the game.
Conner Valesano made a move on the Pipers' goaltender to take a 1-0 lead.
Alex Nagel received an assist on the score. With back and forth play, there was nearly ten minutes of no stoppage until Hamline went on the power play. Stout's penalty kill continued to have success and killed off the penalty.
At 18:17 of the first period, Hamline's Zack Taylor shot the puck from the point and got it passed a screened
Tommi Ahlgren. It is Taylor's first goal on the season and would notch a 1-1 game going into the first intermission.
There were no goals in the second period. Stout dominated most of the period getting off plenty of shots, but only accounted nine shots on net. At 8:13 of the period, the Blue Devils went on the power play for the first time, but could not get any goals in the net. Going into the second intermission the score remained tied at 1-1.
In the third period, the Blue Devils found most of their shots on net this time. With both teams trying to find momentum in the game, it was Stout that found the back of the net to take the lead. At 11:07 of the period, the Blue Devil's
Dylan Zins beat the defenseman, went on the breakaway, took a snap shot, and got the puck passed the Piper's goaltender. The goal was Zins' second goal of the season.
Adam Kresl and
Alex Toscano got the assists on the breakaway goal to make the game 2-1 in favor of Stout.
At 1:02, Hamline pulled Evan Robert to get an extra man, but Stout controlled the puck for the most part to take the win.
Tommi Ahlgren received the win and had 19 saves in the game. Evan Robert saved 27 shots. Shots were in favor of Stout, 29-20.
Up next for the Blue Devils is a matchup at home against #4 Augsburg, tomorrow on January 12.
