Falcons' late rally leaves Blue Devils in the cold

UW-River Falls 4, UW-Stout 3

MENOMONIE (September 26, 2018) - Mother Nature provided a chill as the game went on, but not as big a chill as UW-River Falls gave UW-Stout when the Falcons pulled out a late game 4-3 win over the Blue Devils Wednesday at Nelson Field.

With heavier jackets in abundance in the crowd as the colder fall weather began to settle in, the Blue Devils (2-6-1, 0-1-0 WIAC) saw their 3-2 lead with 10 minutes remaining slip out of their grip as the Falcons scored twice in the final five minutes of the game.

The Falcons' Maggie Koehler scored unassisted in the 85th minute, then assisted on Kari Rollo's game winning goal in the 88th minute to give the Falcons the conference-opening win.

The game proved to be a back-and-forth affair.

River Falls took the lead in the 11th minutes on Camryn Altnau's goal, but Stout knotted the score two mintues later when Sydney Kasper buried Hannah Kirchner's corner kick.

The Falcons (7-2-1, 1-0-0 WIAC) took the lead back in the 32nd minute on a penalty kick goal by Mariah Troje, and carried that lead into the intermission.

Marissa Steele tied the game for the Blue Devils in the 59th minute off Kirchner's free kick. Steele took a pass from Sydney Kasper in the 67th minute for her third goal of the season to give Stout the 3-2 lead.

River Falls held a slight edge in shots, outshooting the Blue Devils 14-12. Stout's Claudia Anderson recorded five saves and the Falcons' Amanda Ladue had four saves.

The Blue Devils return to action Saturday, Sept. 29 when they travel to UW-Stevens Point for a 1 p.m. contest.
