UW-Whitewater 11, UW-Stout 4
WHITEWATER (April 8, 2018) - UW-Stout held off third-ranked UW-Whitewater for most of the opener, but the Warhawks bats came alive late in the game, then carried that into the second game of the WIAC doubleheader, downing the Blue Devils, 6-0, 11-4, in the pair of nine innings games Sunday at Prucha Field at Miller Park.
The Blue Devils'
Jack Donahue, for the most part, kept the Warhawks (14-2, 6-0 WIAC) in check early in game one, allowing a single run in the first inning. Donahue scattered five hits over the first six inning, and stranded two runners. The Blue Devil (3-12, 0-4 WIAC) defense also did their part in holding down the Warhawks, turning two double plays.
But the Stout offense couldn't get anything going after the first inning.
Jordan Wilson opened the game with a leadoff single, then moved to second on
Ben Vanhove's sacrifice bunt. Wilson got to third on
Jon Krueger's groundout, but was left stranded. Stout finished the game with three hits, and stranded three runners. The Warhawks also turned two double plays.
Whitewater got to Donahue in the seventh inning, scoring two unearned runs, as Stout committed two errors. The Warhawks scored three runs on three hits for the final 6-0 score. Donahue went the distance, allowing nine hits and four earned runs. He had four strikeouts and gave up one walk. The loss was Donahue's (2-1) first of the season.
Sam Waters delivered a pinch hit double to lead off the eighth inning.
Max Sires came on to run for Waters, but was left on third. Daytona Bryden, Cal Aldridge and Jeff Szubert each had two hits for the Warhawks. Michael Kaska worked eight innings for the win, striking out six.
In game two, the Blue Devils opened the game with a first inning run. Vanhove slashed a one out single, then scored when
Hunter Merrill doubled.
The Warhawks kept up the hot bats on the cold day, scoring five runs in the bottom of the inning, using a five hit attack. Whitewater built up an 11-1 lead, but Stout staved off elimination by the 10-run rule by scoring three runs in the seventh inning.
Jon Krueger hit a bases loaded single to score one run and
Darek Dieckman plated another on a fielder's choice.
Danny Deis scored Stout's third run of the inning on a Whitewater error.
Stout finished the game with nine hits, led by
Joel Thimsen and
Jared Jarvensivu, who each had two hits.
Zach Carlson went five innings and struck out six, but allowed 13 hits and was charged with all 11 runs.
Max Sires worked one inning of scoreless and hitless ball, striking out one, and
Brad Rindfleisch finished up the final two innings, not allowing a base runner.
The Warhawks got three hits and four RBI from Brett Krause. Bryden, Nick Schrader, and Szubert each had two hits. Three Whitewater pitchers combined for seven strikeouts.
The Blue Devils are scheduled to return to action Wednesday, April 11 when they host UW-Stevens Point at the Woodside Sports Complex in Mauston beginning at 1 p.m. Stout is scheduled to compete at UW-Platteville, Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15.
