Blue Devils drop 14 inning marathon to Pointers

UW-Stevens Point 10, UW-Stout 1 | UW-Stevens Point 4, UW-Stout 1 (14 inn)

MAUSTON (April 11, 2018) - UW-Stout dropped a 10-1 first game to first placed UW-Stevens Point, then took the Pointers to 14 innings before falling in the nighcap marathon, 4-1, Wednesday at Woodside Sports Complex.

The Blue Devils (3-14, 0-6 WIAC) and the Pointers (14-4, 6-0 WIAC) took a 1-1 game into extra innings before the Pointers' William Ilacone hit a sacrifice fly and Kyle Mrozinski followed up in the next at-bat with a two-run home run to left center field.

Peyton Nelson put the Pointers on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Stout countered to tie the score on Ryan Connor's RBI double in the seventh inning.

Brad Rindfleisch, making his first start of the season for the Blue Devils, went eight innings, striking out six and scattering five hits, but was not involved in the decision. The Pointers' Drew Spaeth pitched the final seven innings of the game and got the win, recording seven strikeouts.

Stout finished with eight hits, while the Pointers had 12. Jon Krueger extended his hitting streak to games by hitting safely in both games, going 2-for-4 in the second game. Ben Vanhove and Jared Jarvensivu each had two hits.

In the opener, the Pointers scored four runs in the second and two in the third to take a 6-0 lead, then built that up to a 10-0 in the fifth. Stout staved off elimination by the 10 run rule with a run in the sixth. Jack Hemsath singled home Krueger.

The Pointers had 15 hits and the Blue Devil nine. Krueger was 2-for-4 as was Hemsath. Neal Matson was 3-for-5 for the Pointer. Mrozinski, Nelson, Lucas Luedtke, Christiam Zamudio and Iloncaie each had two hits. Iloncaie had three RBI.

Stout is scheduled to play at UW-Platteville, Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15, weather permitting.
