UW-Whitewater 11, UW-Stout 1 (7 inn)
WHITEWATER (April 7, 2018) - It was a chilly day with temperatures in the mid to high 20s and low 30s as UW-Stout opened the conference portion of the 2018 season at third-ranked UW-Whitewater Saturday. The Warhawks won both contests, 14-4, 11-1, on Prucha Field at Miller Stadium.
In game one, the Warhawks scored in every inning to take the 10-run win in seven innings.
Whitewater (12-2, 4-0 WIAC) opened with a run in the bottom of the first, but Stout (3-10, 0-2 WIAC) took the lead in the top of the second,scoring twice on one hit. With one out, Blue Devil catcher
Hunter Merrill reached when he was hit by a pitch, then advanced on
Ben Vanhove's infield single. Both players advanced a base on a wild pitch.
Reid Akerman plated Merrill with a fielder's choice, moving Vanhove to third. Akerman stole second and Vanhove scored on the play.
The Warhawks countered with four runs off four hits in the fourth inning, then added two runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings for an 11-2 lead.
Stout cut into the lead with a two run sixth inning.
Jon Krueger reached on a one-out single and Merrill was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. Both runners advanced when a pickoff attempt on Krueger went awry at second. Vanhove drove in Krueger on a groundout to shortstop and Akerman drove in Merrill for Stout's final runs of the game. The Warhawks scored a run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to end the game on the 10-run rule.
Stout finished with five hits and Akerman had two RBI.
Jack Hemsath saw his 10-game hitting streak come to an end.
The Warhawks pounded out 17 hits on three Stout pitchers. Daytona Bryden, who leads the NCAA Division III in batting averager, when 4-for-5 with four RBI. Nick Schrader was 3of-r4 with two RBI and Blake Fleischman was 3-for-5.
In game two, the Warhawks scored in every inning but the second inning and held a 3-0 lead when the Blue Devils got on the board with a single run in the fourth.
Jordan Wilson opened the inning with a single, then moved to second on a wild pitch. Akerman reached on an infield error, moving Jordan to third. Jordan came home on Hemsath's groundout to first.
Whitewater scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings and scored four runs in the sixth.
Stout attempted to stave off an early elimination in the seventh.
Kasey Bass led off with a single, and
Danny Deis came on as a pinch runner. Following a flyout,
Joel Hollow sliced a pinch hit single to move to third, but a double play ended the game.
Stout finished with six hits while Whitewater had 10. Wilson was 2-for-4 to lead Stout. Nick Santoro was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead Whitewater. Trevor Cho was 2-for-3 with three runs and Cal Aldridge was 2-for-4.
The teams are scheduled to complete the series, Sunday, April 8 in Whitewater.
