LA CROSSE (April 28, 2018) - Just days after sweeping 25th-ranked UW-Stevens Point, UW-Stout split with 11th ranked UW-Oshkosh Saturday at Copeland Park in La Crosse.
The Blue Devils (8-17, 5-9 WIAC) outhit the Titans (21-6, 8-4 WIAC) in the opener with eight different players getting at least one hit, collecting 14 hits to Oshkosh's 11. But getting those runners home tended to be an issue as Stout stranded 11 runners.
The Titans scored two runs in the first, two in the fourth and one in the sixth before Stout cut the lead to 5-1 in the seventh as
Jordan Wilson drove in a run. The Titans tacked on two more in the eighth and Stout closed out the scoring with a run in the ninth as Wilson picked up his second RBI of the game, using a double to plate
Kyle Hamilton, who reached on a one-out double.
Wilson was 3-for-5 with the two RBI and would also lace three hits in the second game.
Jon Krueger,
Ben Vanhove,
Kasey Bass and Hamilton each had two hits, while
Jared Jarvensivu,
Reid Akerman and
Tim Bott each put a hit in the book.
Wilson served notice in the second game that Blue Devils would be coming home as he led off the game with a home run to center field. The Titans took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first and starter
Max Sires got out of further trouble when Stout ended the inning on a double play.
Stout regained the lead with a two run fifth inning as
Jack Hemsath drilled a single to right field to scored Hamilton and Jarvensivu.
Stout jumped out to a 6-3 lead by scorning three runs the seventh. Wilson doubled in Hamilton, who led off the inning with a walk. Hemsath switched places with Wilson, smacking his second double of the day. Hemsath came home on Vanhove's right field single.
Oshkosh came back with a two-run seventh inning, then pulled to within one run, 6-5, when Jack Paulson's sacrifice fly brought in Jensen Hinton. Oshkosh threatened to ruin
Jack Donahue's first save attempt. With two outs, after surrendering a leadoff single, Alex Koch doubled off the right field wall to move pinch runner Chris Atwood to third. Donahue forced a groundout to end the game and give Stout their third conference win in four games.
Sires earned his first win of the season, facing 30 batters over six complete inning, striking out four and walking four. Donahue earned the save.
Wilson was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Wilson was 6-for-10 on the day. Hemsath was 2-for-5. The Titans outhit Stout 13-8 in the contest, but this time the Titans left 11 runners on base.
The two teams will meet again Sunday, April 29 at Copeland Park in La Crosse.
