Blue Devils sacrifice for first game win, Foresters come back to split

UW-Stout 2, Lake Forest College 0 | Lake Forest College 4, UW-Stout 1

LAKE FOREST, Ill (March 31, 2018) - UW-Stout used two sacrifice flies to win the opener at Lake Forest College, 2-0, but the Forester came back to score three runs in the final two innings of game two to split the weekend series with a 4-1 win Saturday.

Rachel Thomas lifted two sacrifice flies to score the only runs of the first game and Beth Wood struck out eight and allowed no runs for the win.

The scoring for the Blue Devils (12-3) in the first game was nearly identical. In the third inning, with one out and no score, Mary Iliopoulos reached on bunt single, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error on the play. Thomas lifted the ball to left field and the speedy Iliopoulos scored on the play.

It was almost the same in the sixth inning. Clinging to the one run lead, Iliopoulos led off and beat out an infield hit, stole second and again advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Standing on the hot corner, Iliopoulos scored when the left-handed batting Thomas hit a liner to left field and Stout took a 2-0 lead.

Wood was dealing in game one, recording eight strikeouts, the second-most strikeouts she has recorded in a single game. Wood recorded 10 strikeouts against Bay Path College in 2016. The shutout was her first of the season and the 10th of her career. Wood allowed only two hits. The Foresters stranded four runners.

Stout was limited to four hits, with Wood and Iliopoulos each recording two.

In game two, with the score tied at 1 apiece, Lake Forest (13-7) scored one run in the sixth inning on a double by winning pitcher Maddie Webb, then pushed the advantage to three runs on Sydney Wyatt's two-run home run in the seventh inning.

Stout's only run came when freshman Morgan Dunkelberger drew a bases-loaded walk in the third inning. Stout finished with six hits, two by Alicia Meyer and one each by Dunkelberger, Kaylee Francois, Renee Murphy and Iliopoulos. Thomas had a sacrifice bunt to record her third sacrifice of the series. The two sacrifice flies was the most by a Blue Devil in a single game since at least 2000.

Melea Bruns went the distance for the Blue Devils, allowing only five hits, recording two strikeouts and two walks. All four runs were earned. Iliopoulos, the center fielder, cut down one runner at home plate.

Kat Beall had two hits for the Foresters. Wyatt had one hit, but it was the two-run home run. Maria Zepeda scored two runs.

The Blue Devils are scheduled to play at Crown College, Monday, April 2 at 3:30 p.m., then open conference play by heading to UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, April 7 and conference-favorite UW-Whitewater, Sunday, April 8.
