Blue Devils drop conference-opening doubleheader to Warhawks

UW-Whitewater 10, UW-Stout 5 | UW-Whitewater 9, UW-Stout 1 (5 inn)

WHITEWATER (April 8, 2018) - It was a chilly day in Whitewater and it turned out to be a chilly day in the win column for UW-Stout as UW-Whitewater swept the Blue Devils, 10-5, 9-1, in a conference opening doubleheader at Van Steenderen Complex.

The Warhawks (9-7, 2-0 WIAC) scored six runs, aided by three Blue Devil errors, in the sixth inning of the first game to overcome a one run Stout (12-5, 0-2 WIAC) lead, then used three big innings in the nightcap for the five inning win.

The opener was close until the sixth inning. Whitewater took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but Stout captured the lead with a two-run third inning. Kyncaide Diedrich drove in Mary Iliopoulos with an infield single. Diedrich, after stealing second, came home on Beth Wood's single. The Warhawks grabbed the lead back in the bottom of third on a two-run home run by Meg Cohrs.

Renee Murphy punched out her team-leading third home run of the season to knot the game at 3 apiece in the fourth inning. Stout used a two-run fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Iliopoulos led off the inning with a walk, then promptly stole second. Diedrich advanced her to third on her second infield hit of the game. Alicia Meyer smashed a two-run double to left field to give Stout the lead.

The Warhawks got a run in the fifth to pull to within 5-4, then exploded with the six-run sixth inning.

Diedrich, Wood and Meyer each had two hits to lead Stout, which had eight hits. Wood took the loss, walking one and striking out one.

Mattie Klingenmeyer was 3-for-4 and Emily Rux was 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Warhawks' 14-hit attack. Pitcher Bella Matthias struck out nine to get the win.

The second game looked bright for the Blue Devils, opening the game with the first run when Rachel Thomas scored on Wood's single to left center field.

But the Warhawks scored three runs, powered by a two-run home run by Mallory Klotz, on four hits in the bottom of the first. Neither team scored until the fourth inning when Whitewater put up four runs on four hits and two Stout errors. A lead-off home run by Vera Pflugradt and an RBI double ty Rux ended the game in the fifth inning on the 8-run rule.

Stout was limited to four hits, while the Warhawks recorded 14 hits. Mallory Klotz had three hits for the Warhawks and Megan Schweitzer, Cohrs and Pflugradt each had two hits.

Diedrich saw her hitting streak come to an end after 11 games, when she was hitless in three at-bats in the second game.

Stout is scheduled to next be at UW-Eau Claire, Thursday, April 12. Stout is scheduled to host UW-River Falls, Saturday, April 14 and will be at UW-Oshkosh, Sunday, April 15.  All games are subject to weather and field conditions permitting.
