St. Michael's 4, UW-Stout 2
FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 12, 2018) - In their only scheduled doubleheader during their annual spring break trip to Florida, UW-Stout lost two close games to NCAA DII St. Michael's College, 3-2, and 4-2 Monday.
In the opener, the Blue Devils (2-4) struck first, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman
Danny Deis smacked out a one-out triple, then came home on
Jack Hemsath's single. Hemsath stole second, then moved to third on
Jordan Wilson's groundout. A single by
Jon Krueger plated Hemsath to give Stout a 2-0 lead.
Iset Moldenado doubled to lead off St. Michael's (1-6) third inning and moments later scored on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead in half. St. Michael's scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning to take the lead, 3-2. Stout left a runner stranded in the fifth and sixth innings.
Both teams yielded six hits.
Wyatt Ernstmeyer went six innings for Stout, striking out four. Zach Rodgers ganered the win for St. Michaels, pitching five complete innings and striking out four. Trevor Allen came on for the save and struck out three.
In game two, it was a pitching battle between Stout's
Luke Eide and St. Michael's Drew Ferris.
It was a scoreless game until The Blue Devils struck first in the top of the sixth inning when
Danny Deis hit
Jack Hemsath home after a Hemsath triple.
St. Michaels would not back down as the Purple Knights found the first two guys on base to start the inning. After a sacrifice bunt, Stout overthrew the first baseman and St. Michaels got on the board to tie it up. After the errant throw, Cameron Kroeger came up big with a three run shot over the left field fence to make the score 4-1.
The Blue Devils fought back in the top of the seventh inning to score one, but fell short on plating any more runners to make the final score 4-2.
Luke Eide received the loss on the play going five innings, while allowing four hits and two earned runs. Eide also accounted for five strikeouts and two walks.
On the day,
Danny Deis accounted for four hits on the day going 4-8.
Ben Vanhove and
Jack Hemsath each had three hits on the day.
The Blue Devils have an off day on Tuesday, but will be back in action on Wednesday when they face North Park University at 9:00 a.m. EST.
