FORT MEYERS, Fla (March 11, 2018) - UW-Stout's baseball team arrived on Saturday to Fort Meyers after a long 26 hour bus ride. 24 hours later, they played against Edgewood College in a nine inning contest at the Gene Cusic Classic.
The Blue Devils (2-3, 0-0) defeated the Eagles (0-2,0-0) by a score of 15-9.Â
It didn't take long for UW-Stout to put guys on base in the first inning, as the lead-off batter,
Reid Akerman walked,
Kyle Hamilton walked, and
Jack Hemsath legged out an infield single. With bases loaded,
Jordan Wilson hit a ground ball to the shortstop, but was thrown out at first.
Reid Akerman scored on the play. Akerman's run was the only run to score in the first inning for the Blue Devils. Edgewood also scored one run in the first to make the score even at 1-1.Â
In the next two innings, Edgewood held a lead of 5-2. The Blue Devils fought back in the top of the fourth inning to cut the lead into one.Â
After a scoreless fourth inning by the Eagles, Stout regained the lead, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 7-5. Edgewood was not backing down as the Eagles scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 8-7 in favor of Edgewood.Â
The Blue Devils found different ways to get runs across home plate as Stout scored eight unanswered runs. The Eagles plated one more guy in the bottom of the ninth to end the game at 15-9.Â
Zach Carlson started for the Blue Devils and went five innings.
Casey Ryan came in relief in the sixth inning and received the win.
Brad Rindfleisch and
Jace Baumann closed the game out with an inning a piece.Â
Three Stout players had a multi-hit game.
Jordan Wilson and
Reid Akerman each had two hits. Freshman
Danny Deis had three hits and three RBI's. The Blue Devils also recorded eleven walks in the game and four stolen bases.Â
Next up for the Blue Devils is a double header on Monday, March 12 against Saint Michael's College, a Division II team in the NCAA, with the first pitch starting at 12:00 p.m. EST. The first game will be a seven inning game, followed by a nine inning game.Â
