Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Pointers score in third to top Blue Devils

UW-Stevens Point 2, UW-Stout 1

MENOMONIE (February 9, 2018) - Third-ranked UW-Stevens Point (18-4-2, 6-0-1) only needed to score one goal in the third period to secure the win against UW-Stout (6-15-2, 3-4-0).

After playing against each other a week ago, both teams came out of the locker room flying around the ice. The Blue Devils had the first chance to score as Stevens Point sent a guy to the box with just over two minutes into the game. With a man up, Stout could not get anything going on the power play, as the Pointers killed the two minute penalty.

Both teams had their scoring chances, but neither scored during the first period. Stevens Point out shot the Blue Devils 10-5.

Like the first period, both teams came out fired up ready to score the first goal. Each team had scoring chances, but Stout had the upper hand in shots as they out shot the Pointers 5-0 in the first five minutes in the second period.

It was Stevens Point who got on the board first as a shot from the point hit some traffic in front of the net and a bouncing puck got passed Stout's Tommi Ahlgren. Pointers' Logan Fredericks received the goal at the 15:09 mark of the second period.

With momentum going the Pointers way, Stout's Trent Olson ripped a shot from the point and Hunter Anderson was in the right place, at the right time for the tip and the goal to make the score even at 1-1. It is Anderson's fifth goal of the season. Trent Olson and Dylan Zins were accounted for the assists.

The shots for the second period were in favor of Stout, 16-13. There were no penalties taken in the second period.

Back and forth play continued for the game, until Stout's Austin Jackson had a breakaway chance, but Pointers' goalie Max Milosek made the save.

At the 13:30 mark of the third period, Tanner Karty scored a rebound goal to break the tie. It is Karty's, WIAC leading 18th goal of the season. Nong-Lambert and Raver received the assists on the goal.

Stout's Ahlgren left the net to give the Blue Devils an extra attacker, but Karty's goal was the deciding factor in the game, as the Blue Devils could not score another goal.

Pointers' goalie, Max Milosek finished the game with 22 saves and the win. Blue Devils' Tommi Ahlgren finished with 31 saves.

A total of three penalties were called in the fast paced game. The total shots were in favor of Stevens Point, 33-23.

Up next for the Blue Devils is a matchup against UW-River Falls tomorrow, Feb. 10 at River Falls. It will be the last regular season WIAC game for the Blue Devils as they have their eye set on the third seed heading into post-season play.
