Mackey claims game-winner, Blue Devils down Falcons, 82-81

UW-Stout 82, UW-River Falls 81

MENOMONIE (February 7, 2018) - UW-Stout came back from a 12-point second half deficit and Adam Mackey hit the game winner with 1.6 seconds remaining as the Blue Devils defeated UW-River Falls Wednesday on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse.

Mackey's bucket was the exclamation point as the Blue Devils (8-14, 2-9 WIAC) came back from 12 points down.

Trailing 61-49 at 13:11 of the second half, Stout went on a 15-2 run to take a 64-63 lead six minutes later.  Isaac Elliott and Sam Ortmann would each score five points in the run and Mackey hit a 3-pointer and Josh Mericle a two-pointer.

The Falcons (14-7, 5-6 WIAC) tied the game at 66-66 with 6:52 remaining, setting up a contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Over the remainder of the game, Stout connected on four 3-pointers, two by Elliott, one by Joe Duty and one by Peyton Fulkerson, two free throws by Ortmann and Mackey's game winner.

During the same stretch, the Falcons got seven points from Brandon Witt, three by Austin Moldenhauur, two by Alex Herink and a 3-pointer by Matt Keller with 22 seconds remaining to put River Falls up 81-80. Stout worked the ball around and Mackey found some space to drain the shot.

Two timeouts later, River Falls in-bounded the ball and Keller took a halfcourt shot that drew iron, but fell away as the buzzer sounded and Stout had recorded its second conference win.

The teams went wild from 3-point range, combining for 27 3-pointers made. Stout dropped in a school record 16 3-point field goals made. Elliott matched a season-high with six 3-pointers and led all scorers with 25 points, matching a career-best. Ortmann tossed in 19 points, including all five free throw attempts, and Duty scored 13 points. Mackey finished with five points.

Herink led the Falcons with 22 points. Brenann Witt chalked up a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Keller tallied 11 points, making three 3-pointers.

The Falcons more than doubled up Stout off the glass, pulling down 43 rebounds to 20 for Stout.

Stout shot steady all night, shooting 28-of-54 from the floor (51.9 percent) and 16-of-28 from 3-point range (57.1 percent). Stout was 10-of-13 from the line. The Falcons made 29-of-61 shots from the floor (47.5 percent), 11-of-32 from 3-point range (34.4 percent) and knocked down 12-of-19 rebounds.

The Blue Devils broke the school team record of most 3-pointers in a game of 15, a mark Stout hit twice - against Robert Morris University in November, 2016, and against Elmhurst College in December 2003, the night Jeff Vandenberghe set the Stout individual game record of nine 3-pointers made. Jerrod Bucholtz matched Vandenberghe's mark in January 2011 in a loss against River Falls.

The Blue Devils will be at UW-Stevens Point, Saturday, Feb. 10 at 3 p.m., then will be at UW-La Crosse, Wednesday, Feb. 14.
