UW-Stout 3, UW-River Falls 1
MENOMONIE (February 3, 2018) - It took two third period goals by UW-Stout (6-14-2, 3-3) to defeat UW-River Falls (6-15-2, 0-6), 3-1. The Blue Devils had not won in the last nine games, but fought off the Falcons to move back into third place in the WIAC.
It didn't take long for the Blue Devils to get on the board as
Kyle Sylvester notched his fifth goal of the season just over four minutes into the game.
Trent Olson grabbed the only assist on the play.
The first penalty came with 6:25 left in the first period as UW-Stout saw a man down. The Blue Devils used its quickness and good positioning to kill the penalty.
Just after the penalty kill by the Blue Devils, the Falcons sent a guy to the penalty box. With only four guys on the ice, River Falls' Joe Drapluk sent a shot past
Tommi Ahlgren for a shorthanded goal to even up the score.
The second period ended scoreless, but both teams had plenty of opportunities to get the go ahead goal. The period had four penalties, but both teams couldn't capitalize.
Half way through the third period, Blue Devils'
Jonathan Marzec scored his fourth goal of the year to break the tie and make the score 2-1 in favor of Stout.
Connor Chambers came away with the only assist.
UW-Stout was not finished as
Austin Jackson ripped a shot from the point to give the Blue Devils an insurance goal. It is Jackson's fourth goal of the year.
UW-Stout's
Tommi Ahlgren finished the game with 30 saves and recorded the win. Falcons' Zach Quinn had 25 saves.
Both teams went scoreless on the power play with River Falls going 0-5 and UW-Stout going 0-3.
Up next for the Blue Devils is a rematch against UW-Stevens Point in Menomonie. Game start is set for 7:05 p.m.
