MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (February 28, 2018) - UW-Stout lost both games of a season-opening doubleheader with Augsburg University in the final inning of each game Wednesday at US Bank Stadium. The Auggies won the first game, 3-0, with a three-run ninth, then notched the second game, 8-5, with a six-run bottom of the seventh win, highlighted by a grand slam.

The first game was scoreless throughout the regulation seven innings, and then some. The Blue Devils' (0-2) Max Sires and the Auggies (2-0) Jamie Kaye settled into a pitchers dual, both going into the ninth inning.

The Auggies collected a hit in each of the first three innings, and got a runner to third base in the first inning, but Sires was able to weather the threat and struck out the final two batters.

The Blue Devils were held hitless until Kyle Hamilton reached on a two-out single in the third inning. Both teams stranded runners in the sixth inning and Augsburg stranded a runner in the seventh. The Auggies put a runner on in the eighth, but Stout turned a double play to end the threat.

The Auggies got to Sires for three runs in the ninth inning, drawing a lead off walk by Mike Brookshaw, who was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Brookshaw advanced to third on a deep fly ball, then scored on Cam Erickson's pinch hit single. A double by Clayton Bodine moved pinch runner Josh Tyler to third and Dylan Foote's single to center field brought both runners home.

Stout threatened in the bottom of the ninth. Hamilton reached on a bunt single, then advanced on Akerman's single. A double play moved Hamilton to third, but the Auggies' Kaye foreced a flyout to end the game.

Both Kaye and Sires notched six strikeouts and Sires gave up the only walk of the game. The Auggies finished with nine hits to three for Stout.

The second game saw much more offense, with Stout getting six hits to Augsburg's 11.

Augsburg drew first blood off Stout starter Zach Carlson, getting a run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Bodine. Carlson worked out of the jam, leaving the bases loaded.

Stout tied the game in the third. Freshman Danny Deis sliced a one-out single, then advanced to second when Akerman was hit by a pitch. Jack Hemseth moved both runners on a ground out. Jordan Wilson singled home Deis on an infield single to tie the game at 1-1.

The Auggies took the lead back in the bottom of the third on an RBI by Jordan Peoples.

Stout seemed to gain control late in the game, scoring two runs in each the sixth and seventh innings.

In the sixth inning, Joel Hollow drew a lead-off walk and Ryan Connor was safe on an error. Ben Vanhove pushed the runners ahead on a sacrifice bunt and freshman catcher plated both runners with a triple to center field. Merrill would help keep the Auggies off the board, throwing out a runner attempting to steal in the sixth.

Stout struck again in the seventh when Akerman drew a lead off walk, then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball. Wilson plated Akerman and Hemseth, who had walked, to give Stout a 5-2 lead.

A bases loaded walk gave the Auggies their first score in the seventh inning and Brookshaw drove in a run with a single to pull the Auggies to within 5-4. Stout did cut down the lead runner when first baseman Connor threw home for the first out of the inning. Walker Rogers ended the game with a bases loaded blast to center field.

Wilson was 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Blue Devils. Peoples was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Rogers was 2-for-3 with all four RBI coming on the single swing of the bat.

Carlson went six innings for Stout, striking out three and giving up three earned runs. Casey Ryan was saddled with the loss. Jacob Kari went 5.2 innings with three strikeouts for Augsburg, but reliever Charles Linder picked up the win.

Stout returns to action Wednesday, March 7 when they return to US Bank Stadium to face Hamline University at 11 p.m. in a double header.
