EAU CLAIRE (February 23, 2018) - UW-Stout and UW-Eau Claire met for the first time ever in the semi-final round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Commissioner's Cup Friday at Hobbs Ice Arena. The Commissioner's Cup is in it's fifth year of being contested.
The Blue Devils (6-16-3) scored the first goal of the evening, but the Blugolds (16-9-1) scored four unanswered goals on their way to a 4-1 win.
Kyle Sylvester put the Blue Devils on the board first, scoring, with assists from defensemen
Mathias Ahman and
Connor Chambers at 3:22 of the first period.
Eau Claire tied the game four minutes later on a goal by Jacob Walter. Eau Claire scored two goals in the second period, with Johnny Mueller scoring on the power play at 11:43 and Colton Wolter scoring at 17:03 to make it 3-1. Zach Kennedy scored at 10:38 of the third period to close out the scoring.
Eau Claire held a decided advantage in shots, outshooting Stout 42-26.
Tommi Ahlgren stopped 38 shots, including 21 in the second period. Eau Claire's Zach Dement recorded 24 saves. Stout was 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Blugolds were 1-for-2.
The Blue Devils must win Saturday night to force a tie-breaking mini-game.
Top-seeded UW-Stevens Point defeated fifth-seeded UW-River Falls, 5-1, in the other semi-final contest.
