MENOMONIE (December 8, 2018) - After dropping a non-conference game last night, UW-Stout (7-4-1) found their stride as they beat Northland College (4-6-2), 7-1. The Lumberjacks scored first, but the Blue Devils scored seven unanswered goals. Stout had four goals in the second period and three in the third period.
The first period showed chances for both teams, but both came out scoreless. The first penalty came at 13:06 of the first period as Stout went on the power play. Shots showered the Northland goaltender, but no goals were accounted for. The Lumberjacks had a power play chance as well with 3:45 left to go in the period, but couldn't come away with a goal against a stout Blue Devil penalty kill. Both teams went into the locker room with no goals. Shots were in favor of Northland, 10-8.
The second period showed a lot more scoring as the Lumberjacks got on the board first only 1:37 seconds into the period. Cole Woodliffe beat Stout's
Tommi Ahlgren to give Northland the 1-0 lead. But the Blue Devils didn't back down and score four unanswered goals to go into the third period up 4-1.
The tying goal for Stout was a shot from the hash marks as
Logan Nelson beat the Lumberjack goalie on the blocker side. The second goal was scored by
Arturas Laukaitis. The goal is Laukaitis' sixth goal on the season. After hopping off the bench, Stout's
Alex Nagel received a pass from
Arturas Laukaitis, shot it, and beat Northland's goalie to make the score 3-1. The last goal of the period was scored by
Austin Jackson with an assist from Joe Klevin to make the game 4-1 going into intermission.
The Blue Devils used the same momentum from the second period to score a quick goal just 4:12 into the third period to make the game 5-1.
Logan Nelson found the back of the net for his second goal of the night with assists from
Conner Valesano and
Jack Cernohous. The assist from
Conner Valesano gave him a playmaker in the game. Under two minutes later,
Austin Jackson scored his second goal of the night with a pass coming from
Gavin Smith. Just under a minute later,
Raphael Gosselin scored his first career goal as a Blue Devil to make the final 7-1.
Tommi Ahlgren started in net for the Blue Devils and stopped 21 shots.
Evan Bisek came in relief in the third period and saved nine. Northland's David Krejcik stopped 14 saves just before Victor Forslund came into the game to stop seven in the third period.
Up next for the Blue Devils is a double header against Finlandia University on Friday, December 14 and 15. Stout will be back home in the Fanetti Community Center on January 11 as they take on Hamline University.
