Tommies win in a high scoring game against Blue Devils

St. Thomas 7, UW-Stout 4

MENOMONIE (December 7, 2018) - In a high scoring affair, St. Thomas University (5-4-2) scored seven goals against UW-Stout (6-4-1). The Blue Devils went into the first intermission up 2-1, but gave up four goals in five minutes in the second period to go down, 5-3. That was enough for the Tommies as they downed Stout, 7-4.

It didn't take long for Stout to find the back of the net. Just under two minutes into the game Austin Jackson scored his first goal of the season as he made a hustling play for a wrap-around goal. Alex Toscano got the assist on the play.

With a lot of back and forth play, there were almost seven minutes without a whistle until Stout served a two minute minor and went on the penalty kill. The Blue Devils hold a 91.5% penalty kill on the season and they held St. Thomas scoreless during the power play. But the Tommies didn't need a power play to score as Tanner Barnes beat Stout's Ridge Gerads to tie it up with 8:47 left in the period.

Stout prevailed and scored just under two minutes after the tying goal. Defenseman Trent Olson took a shot from the point and Hunter Anderson tipped it over the shoulder of Tommies' Cam Burggrabe to make the game, 2-1. Shots in the period were in favor of St. Thomas, 12-10.

Both teams came out flying with both teams having chances to score and both teams had chances on the power play, but no goals were accounted for. St. Thomas then scored at the 9:43 mark in the second period. Johnny Panvica scored to tie the game.

Unlike the first period, the second period had more stoppages. Just under a minute after the Tommies tied the game, St. Thomas' Brett Gravelle scored his fifth goal of the year to give the Tommies their first lead of the game. After the goal, Stout went on the power play. With just five seconds into the power play, Joe Kleven ripped a shot from the point to beat Burggrabe. Raphael Gosselin and Arturas Laukaitis got the assists to tie the game back up at 3-3.

But the Tommies weren't backing down, as Johnny Panvica scored his second goal of the night just 12 seconds after the Stout tying goal. A little over one minute later, St. Thomas' Luke Radetic made the game 5-3. There were five goals in the five minute span, but St. Thomas took the lead going into the third period.

Down 5-3, Stout needed some momentum to get back to even. But St. Thomas scored only 1:02 into the third period. Tanner Barnes scored his second goal of the night for the Tommies. Barnes was not done as he scored again with nine minutes left in the game to earn a hat trick to make the game 7-3.

Stout's Mathias Ahman ended up scoring on a power play to make the final 7-4. Assists were given to Connor Chambers and Hunter Anderson

St. Thomas' Cam Buggrabe ended the night with 33 saves, while Stout's Ridge Gerads ended with 31 saves. Shots were in favor of St. Thomas 38-37.

The Blue Devils are back at the Fanetti Community Center tomorrow night, December 7 while they take on the Lumberjacks of Northland College.
