Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Blue Devils survive Silver Lake, take 96-94 win

UW-Stout 96, Silver Lake College 94

MENOMONIE (December 4, 2018) - John Keefe (Sr, Medford) hit a 3-pointer with 8.8 seconds remaining in the game to lift UW-Stout to a two-point 96-94 win over a scrappy Silver Lake College Tuesday on Dewey Mintz Court in Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Blue Devils (4-3) had a comfortable 13-point, 56-43, halftime, but Silver Lake (2-10) came out of the locker room sizzling, hitting their first five shots from the floor and six of their first seven shots to cut into the Stout lead to 60-56 less than four minutes into the half. The Lakers kept up the torrid pace, hitting 10 of 11 shots over the first eight minutes and took a 69-68 lead at 12:26.

Behind the shooting of Byron Dean, Jr, who scored 17 of his game-high 30 points in the second half, the Lakers built as much as a six point lead halfway through the second half.

After Stout tied the game at 78 with eight minutes remaining, the lead changed hands eight times and was tied twice.

Zach Dahl (Sr, Buffalo, Minn) gave Stout the lead at 91-90 with two free throws at 3:25, then extended the lead to 93-90 with a layup. There was no score for the next 90 seconds until Dean cut the Stout lead to 93-92 at 1:26. Following a miss by Stout, Thomas Bullock gave the Lakers a 94-93 lead.

Dahl attempted a 3-pointer, but the Lakers' Patrick Walls grabbed the rebounds and tossed the ball upcourt, only to see the ball go back to Stout on a traveling call with about 30 seconds remaining.

The Blue Devils worked the ball around and Keefe, seconds after missing a layup, pulled up to drain the 3-point shot. Full court pressure slowed down Silver Lake, but Walls had a good look at a 3-pointer just before the buzzer, only to draw iron and Kaden Koski (Fr, Byron, Minn) secured the ball for the Stout win.

The Lakers had five players score in double digits and the Blue Devils had four players go double digits.

Dean lead all scorers, hitting 10 of 17 shot from the floor, including three 3-pointers and 7 of 11 free throws. Michael Cantre collected his second double-double in a row, scoring 22 points pulling dow 16 rebounds. Bullock had 16 point and Walls and Corey Lloyd each had 10 points.

The Lakers shot 52.9 percent from floor (37-70) for the game, but kicked it up a gear in the second half, hitting 63.6 percent of their shots (21-33) after the break. The Blue Devils cooled off after intermission. Stout shot 52.4 percent (22-42)  in the first half, but only 38.7 percent (12-31) in the second half to finish at 46.6 percent (34-73)

Keefe led Stout with 24 points, scoring 17 points in the first half. Luke Geiger (So, Sherwood) scored 15 points, nine in the second half. Dahl and Braden Walbeck (Jr, Fall Creek) each scored 12 points. Koski finished with a collegiate-best eight points. D'Marcco Patrick (Jr, Kenosha) had seven points, but the point guard had four steals and two of Stout's five blocked shots.

Stout was stellar from the line, hitting 16 of 17 charity attempts (94.1 percent). Keefe was 5 of 5, with Dahl and Geiger both hitting all four attempts.

Stout held a slight 40-37 lead in rebounds, with guard Kyle Williams (Jr, Brooklyn Park, Minn) leading Stout with six. Keefe, Koski and Matt Newman (Jr, Sturgeon Bay) each had five rebounds.

The Blue Devils return to action Friday, Dec. 7 when they travel to Crown College.
