Blue Devils control tempo, take 3-2 win over St. Olaf

MENOMONIE (November 9, 2018) - St. Olaf College scored the first goal on their first shot of the game, but UW-Stout dominated most of the game and came out victorious with a score of 3-2. 

The Blue Devils came out in the first period buzzing while controlling the puck for most of the first three minutes of the game. Stout had four shots in the first three minutes, but couldn't find the back of the net. The Oles didn't have a shot on net for the first 3:30 of the game, but scored on their first shot of the game at 3:47 to give St. Olaf a 1-0 lead. The Oles' Mitch Dolter shot the puck from the slot and found the back of the net. Tuukka Totro got the assist on the play. 

The first period was much dominated by Stout, but could not get a goal. The Blue Devils out shot St. Olaf by 11 in the first period. Both teams had an opportunity to score on a power play, but no goals were accounted for. After the first period, the score was in favor of the Oles, 1-0. 

With many chances to score in the first period, it didn't take long for the Blue Devils to get on the scoreboard in the second period. Arturas Laukaitis scored his team leading fourth goal on the season. Raphael Gosselin and Mathias Ahman both recorded an assist on the score. A minute and a half after the equalizing goal, the Blue Devils found themselves on a power play. St. Olaf killed off the penalty to keep the score even. 

With 12:34 seconds left to go in the second period, the Blue Devils found themselves on the power play again. With many chances to score and having five shots blocked, St. Olaf killed off the penalty. 

At the 13:04 mark into the second period, Stout's Conner Valesano scored a goal from the slot to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Blue Devils. Alex Nagel and Dylan Zins added assists on the play. Six seconds after the goal, Stout found themselves up one man and would go on the power play. Trying to make it a two goal game with a power play, the Blue Devils would take a penalty of their own and both teams skated four on four. 

After the scoring two goals in the second period, the score read 2-1 with Stout leading. The Blue Devils again dominated the period and out shot the Oles 13-9. 

In the third period, it didn't take long for the Blue Devils to make it a two goal game. Just under two minutes into the third period, Logan Nelson scored on the power play to make the score 3-1. Conner Valesano recorded his second point of the night, notching an assist on the score. 

The Oles would not back down as they scored almost midway through the third period. Chris Koziel scored his first goal of the season to make the score within one goal. 

With a one goal lead, Stout would go on the defensive game, but still dominated their offensive side of the ice. The score remained the same at 2-1 and the Blue Devils were victorious. 

Stout's Tommi Ahlgren got the win in net and saved 18 shots. Ole's Noah Parker had 38 saves in the contest. Stout doubled the Oles shots, 41-20. 

Up next for the Blue Devils is a non-conference game against Gustavus Adolphis College tomorrow, November 9 at 7:00 at the Fanetti Community Center.
