EAU CLAIRE (January 24, 2018) - UW-Stout cut the deficit to one goal in the second period, but UW-Eau Claire scored twice in the third period to give the Blue Devils their first conference loss of the season, a 5-2 decision at Hobbs Ice Arena Wednesday.
The Blugolds jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first period, but
Gavin Smith scored for Stout (5-11-2, 2-1-0 WIAC) in the second to cut the margin and make the score 3-2. The Blugolds' Jake Wolter scored twice in the third period, including a shorthanded goal with 50 seconds remaining in the game.
Eau Claire (13-8-0, 3-2-0 WIAC) opened the game with goals by Jake Bresser four minutes in and Tyler Hart 11 minutes into the first period.
Stout took advantage of the power play at 14:16 when
Kyle Sylvester scored, with assists by
Conner Valesano and
Mathias Ahman, to make the score 2-1. Eau Claire ended the period with a 3-1 lead on Scott Munro's power play goal at 18:26.
Smith scored the only goal of the second period, notching the marker at 15:09 to make the score 3-2, with assists by
Lucas Carroll and
Jack Forbort. Wolter scored twice for the Blugolds in the third, scoring at 9:32 and again at 19:10. Wolter also had two assists in the game. Connor Wolter finished the game with three assists.
Stout's
Tommi Ahlgren recorded 29 saves, while the Blugolds' Zach Dyment had 16 saves.
Stout was 1 of 5 on the power play, Eau Claire 1 of 2. Stout took five penalties for 10 minutes, Eau Claire nine penalties for 29 minutes.
