Blue Devils Drop Season Opener 5-1 to SUNY Geneseo

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The fifth ranked University of Wisconsin-Stout Polytechnic hockey team (0-1-0) opened its season with a 5-1 loss to No. 11 SUNY Geneseo (1-0-0) Friday.

The Blue Devils recorded 29 shots but went 0-for-4 on the power play. Geneseo converted two of its six power-play opportunities.

Stout generated early offensive pressure, including a pair of attempts by Hayden Stocks, before Sebastian Monaco turned aside Geneseo's first shot on goal. The Blue Devils took two penalties in the opening 10 minutes, and Geneseo capitalized on its second power play when Jack McDonald scored at 10:35. Sterling Wolters added an even-strength goal less than a minute later at 11:29 to give Geneseo a 2-0 lead.

Stout earned a late first-period power play and created opportunities from Stocks, Arhip Sidarovich and John Ross, but Geneseo killed off the advantage to carry its two-goal lead into the first intermission.

Geneseo applied pressure early in the second period, with Monaco making several saves while the Blue Devils killed off penalties to John Ross and Nathan Phillips. Stout responded with a goal at 3:18 when Ikki Kogawa found the back of the net off assists from Sidarovich and Fyodor Nikolayenya, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Geneseo answered at 18:00 as Nathan Stachowiak scored to restore the two-goal advantage heading into the second intermission.

The Blue Devils looked to get back within one early in the third period, earning a power play following an interference penalty. Stout was unable to convert, and another power-play opportunity later in the period produced shots from Nikolayenya and Kogawa.

After killing off a penalty, Stout continued to look for an opening. However, a faceoff violation penalty at 16:40 led to a Geneseo power-play goal from Cameron Ricotta at 17:01, extending the lead to 4-1. Sidarovich later hit the post, and Stout pulled Monaco for an extra attacker during a late power play in an attempt to generate offense. Geneseo's Greg Diamond sealed the 5-1 victory with a short-handed, empty-net goal with 27 seconds remaining.

Kogawa scored Stout's lone goal and finished with three shots. Sidarovich recorded an assist, put four shots on goal and won 16 faceoffs. Nikolayenya also added an assist and led the Blue Devils with five shots. Monaco finished with 30 saves in net.
