MENOMONIE (September 8, 2017) - UW-Stout twice took the lead, but could not hang on as Carleton College handed the Blue Devils a 3-2 loss in the Blue Devils home opener Friday at Nelson Field.
Stout (0-3-0) jumped out to an early lead midway through the first half when
Sydney Kasper (Jr, Owatonna, Minn) put a through ball to
Ryanne Millis(So, Shakopee, Minn), who scored her first goal of the season in the 27th minute.
But the Knights would not let that goal stand for long as their leading scorer, Nora Mertz, added to her total with an assist from Libby Franchot, three minutes later and the game went into halftime tied at 1-1.
Stout needed only six minutes to find the lead again when Kasper and Millis worked together to deliver the ball to freshman
Kaitlyn Hess (Wisconsin Rapids) in the 51st minute for her first collegiate goal.
The Knights threatened around the 55-minute mark with a near open net and a clear shot. But Blue Devil defender
Nikki Sedivy (Sr, Medford, Minn) made a run on the ball and drove it out the end line to break up the play.
Emma Wasend would have a hand in the final two goals of the game, making a pass to Annika Martensson in the 68th minute and again in the 71st minute, this time hitting Mertz for her second goal of the game.
The Knights put nine shots on frame, with
Lynn Johnson recorded five saves. A Blue Devil defender came in to make another save in the first half. The Blue Devils put eight shots on net, with Anna Roethler recording six saves.
Millis, Ness and
Sarah Dickmann (So, Shawano) each put two shots on goal. Mertz had five shots on net for the Knights.
Stout returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 13, when they travel to UW-Superior in search of their first win of the season.
