WINONA, Minn. (September 2, 2017) - After a lackluster opening day of play, UW-Stout worked to turn things around by splitting a pair of five matches, falling in the opener, 3-2, to the University of Chicago, but picking up their first win of the season with a 3-2 decision over Central College Saturday at the St. Mary's University Ground Round/Sugar Loaf Invitational.
The Blue Devils (1-3) had some relatively unknown players step in both contests.
Kylie Hoff, who saw action in nine sets all of last season, had a collegiate-best 17 kills in the 25-27, 25-17, 17-25, 25-18, 15-10 loss to Chicago. Hoff had 12 kills during her freshman season.
Ashley Pratt, last season's kills leader, finished with 11 kills.
Jessica DuVal had 28 assists and
Emily Makina had 20.
Freshman
Amber Ripley led Stout in the 19-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-21, 15-11, win over Central College, finishing with 16 kills, nearly doubling her total of the three previous matches this season. Pratt finished the match with 13 kills.
Emily Bialka had 17 assists and Makina 18 against Central.
Stout will travel to the UW-Oshkosh Invitational next weekend, facing Lawrence University and Benedictine University, Friday, Sept. 8 and Concordia-Wisconsin, Saturday, Sept. 9.
