Johns Hopkins University 2, UW-Stout 0
BALTIMORE, Md (September 2, 2017) - Except for a penalty kick goal, the UW-Stout defense kept 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins University from scoring for the first 88 minutes of the game, but the Blue Jays captured a 2-0 win in the opening game for both teams at the Johns Hopkins Invitational.
The Blue Devils (0-1-0) kept the Blue Jays scoreless in the opening half as Stout goalkeeper
Lynn Johnson made five saves before the first whistle.
Johns Hopkins is ranked 13th in the United Soccer Coaches/NSCAA preseason poll and last season advanced to the third round of the NCAA playoffs.
The Blue Jays (1-0-0) scored the first goal of the game in the 57th minute when Maggie Coulson beat Johnson on a penalty kick. Johnson continued to make spectacular saves, finishing the second half with five additional saves and 10 on the game.
Hopkins got the clincher with just under two minutes left to play when Kristen Hori found Maddy Rocks in front of the net, and Rocks tapped the ball in the net.
"I thought we were organized as a team and forced them to work for their shots," coach
Ryan Raufus said. "Lynn made some nice saves for us today."
The Blue Devils, who were able to manage only one shot on the day, have a 24-hour turn around when they face Mount St. Mary's College at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 3 at Johns Hopkins.
