Bethel University 3, UW-Stout 1
MENOMONIE (September 15, 2017) - UW-Stout held off a Bethel University rally in the first set to capture the opening set, 26-24, but the Royals came back to hand the Blue Devils three straight losses to take a 3-1 decision in Stout's home opener Friday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
Stout (4-5) jumped out to a big lead early in the first set, but Bethel got back to as close as 19-15 before going on to tie the set at 24-24 to send the game into extra points. Stout got a kill from
Emily Bialka and the Royals were called on a ball-handling error to end the match.
Bethel (8-2) controlled the second set, going on to a 25-13 decision. The Blue Devils fell behind in the third set and could never quite recover, but pulled to within 22-20 on a kill by
Kara Simonson, before Bethel took the match 25-21. It was more of the same in the fourth match as the Blue Devils fell behind, did ted the score at 19-19 before Bethel finished the match with a 25-22 decision.
Amber Ripley and
Kennedy Strain each recorded 13 kills and Emily Cain added 11 for the Blue Devils.
Kristin Stern led Bethel with 13 kills and Tina Hoppe and Karin Canakes each recorded 12.
Stout will be at the UW-River Falls Invitational Saturday, Sept. 16 to face the College of St. Benedict and the University of St. Thomas.
